Strange Find.

My daughter was shopping in an antique shop when she came across this & bought it for me.

I think its from a signal box but I'm not sure what it's purpose is ?

I think its a signal section indicator ?

As far as I know it came from the UK ?

Anyone have any idea what I'm likely to find in there or what sort of voltage these things worked at ?

All I know is that it's heavy 

It's supposed to be a Christmas present so I told her to take it away until then.

I had access to a similar thing about 40  years ago and could make the needle swing with a 9v battery

I think they used a low voltage (9-12v) where the connection was made by the wheels of the train. The indicators would be moved by the voltage to indicate a train within the section of track.
