I have Ken's files, he gave me all his stuff;- research, drawings, print & etch files the week before he passed with the plan that I or someone would carry on his work. Unfortunately his family put restrictions on their use and I have not resolved the issue yet due to my own family & friends deaths over the last two years, It's just a nightmare!

I'm currently building two of his test etch kits for his wife, he was working on 4 kits in his last days. When I have these finished I hope to sit down with her and resolve the issues. We also want to put up his research archive for open access but there is a huge amount of potential copyright issues with this- as all the folders are full of downloaded images from the internet!

Sounds like an amazing resource Eoin, so good luck in sorting it and great to know Ken's stuff is in safe hands.

I was very glad when Leslie (Provincial Wagons) was able to pass on some of my GSWR 0 gauge stuff on to Ken, and really sorry to hear the news of his untimely death. Best wishes with sorting out the print files, it will be nice to see these get a wider availability.

I sympathise with you, Eoin, over the matter of copyright issues when trying to make public what was formerly private research. I like to think that most of the photographers whose works found themselves copied into such research would take the broad view that it was better that their photos got used to the good of all, but it's never that simple.

I have the same problem with the late, and much missed, Steve Rafferty's deep research into GNR carriages - also full of downloaded photos. Given a lot of time, these "illustrations" could either be replaced with others, or the copyright issues resolved.

That's why we desperately  need some of you younger folk to step forward and help with these tasks - I'm eighty, and two lifetimes wouldn't allow me to do the things I'd like to do. I have to hope that the IRRS Archive has a branch wherever I end up .........

I agree, it’s a real challenge. On my research into the AEC railcars and for my IRRS talk, whenever I have asked living copyright holders for permission to use their images, it has been granted promptly and freely - thanks to all! 
But once they pass and the copyright passes elsewhere, it’s so much more difficult. 
Fortunately we have a man at the IRRS and CIE archives, but otherwise it’s a real problem.
