Would anyone point me in the right direction of getting a 00 gauge NIR 80 Class thumper please?

I think they come up from time to time on the dreaded eBay, occasionally completed, sometimes is a kit iirc

 

I think they were used down south for the time on loan/hire to IR for some push/pull services in the 80s....

Don't rule out having a go at scratchbuilding one. There's a great account of a build by Lima33 here:

Not push-pull... they were under their own power. They did replace the old ex-AEC railcar push-pull units on the Greystones and Maynooth services, though.

They were used in the Cork area for Cork to Cobh services, they also done plenty of specials and did pop up in some surprising places in the south.

Correct, that should have read " in lieu of some push-pull..."
