Thanks for your advice and I have over 40 photos and nearly 5000 words done already on just the history of the Strabane CDR station alone plus material to do GNR station soon.
We might be able to help each other? If interested send me a PM?
The last of the Baltic tanks. The only one of the steam engines bought by Dr Cox for the USA not to survive. Ended up after working one of the lifting trains in Letterkenny. Despite being repainted in Swilly green ended up being scrapped in early 1968 to make room for a shopping centre!
Doing some research on the station for an article. Have loads of photos and information on post WW2 period. However cannot find any photos or maps pre 1905. Even the online maps for both NI and ROI are blank for the area where the railway station is! Any suggestions or help?
The Swilly always had a brake coach on each goods train. They were very helpful to enthusiasts in the last years. Seen photos from English visitors in 1952 so maybe same party?
Just got a copy of this bookazine this morning in the post. Articles on the Cavan and Leitrim and NG railcars. Great colour photos of the Donegal, West Clare and the C&L. Published by Kelsey Publishing.
You can buy a 2and hand copy of that magazine. Try Vintage Carriages Trust for reliable service but do not try Magazine Exchange from personal experience.
Probably coaches 350 and 353 as they were the spare coaches and ended up in Ballycastle after closure. The other 3 coaches were sold in 1952 to the CDR as they were in Ballymoney after closure. Could the photo be just after closure?
Remember reading in an article that when the Ballycastle line closed the 3 regular coaches ended up in Ballymoney
This meant when the CDR bought them at auction they were easily transferred to Vixtoria Road. However the other 2 ex B&L coaches ended up in Ballycastle. The UTA wanted more money to.move them to Ballymoney so the price was higher than their scrap value. Result the CDR only bought 3 coaches not 5!
