Bogie cement wagons?
-
Can you tell us about the weathering on the wagons John, they look great.
-
I imagine there were many variations in details like the 30 ton vans.

I have used Kadees in the past in my American HO days but am just getting round to converting the South Waterford Line now. The opens have #5 in their own boxes as I had them on hand. I'm not sure yet about magnetic uncoupling. For now I will be using wooden skewers as I did on my previous US themed layouts. This system is extremely practical on a high level walk around layout.

Finally the conversion to Kadee couplers has begun. So far 165, four Bulleid opens and JM designs brake van have been done. The new couplers have greatly improved the running of the light Bulleid opens and I was surprised how much of a improvement in appearance the closer coupling made.

I picked up two pairs of #19 for my MM 141/181 locos today and fitted a pair to the brake van, the first step in converting from tension lock couplers. No problem on my minimum radius curve, roughly 22 inch radius in a fiddle yard but I will try an #18. Thanks to everyone who responded. Despite living in the land of Kadees no one over here knows anything about converting European rolling stock.

What Kadee do you recommend for the brake van John?

That's the very one. I did repaint the green to grey to better represent the 1974 era.

For comparison, left to right, palvan with 12 ton van end, with altered end as supplied with the kit and the Parkside 12 ton van. The 12 ton van comes with two different ends. The ends with the lighter buffers are correct for the 12 ton van the heavier ones best resemble the pal van ones.
-
I should mention that the brown van has the ends from a Parkside 12 ton van whereas the grey one uses the ends from the palvan kit.

I agree with John's comments about the roof profile. On this model I added a layer of plasticard to the roof to raise the height somewhat. I think it improves the model overall even at the cost of the over scale roof thickness being apparent on the ends.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUMmP-HTULw My son Kieran Made this movie of an impromptu operating session on the South Waterford Line while visiting from Korea where he is learning the language and teaches English. I really should have taken the time to clean the track and tidy up the layout before we started. Please ignore signal indications as the signaling system wiring is a work in progress.

The latest arrival on the South Waterford Line. I'm so glad I got my order in in time for these JM Design brake vans since I missed the earlier flying snail version and these two are no longer shown on John's website. Next project is to aquire more grey wagons for a 1967 operating session.

The last one I saw in operation was in Limerick in 1980 or 81. I believe it was the wagon works pilot.

A55 on a short goods on the South Waterford line in the late sixties. Apart from the brake van which is scratch built all the wagons are Provincial Wagons kits. These kits are not at all difficult to build. Painting is even easier, all you need is rattle can of grey or brown paint. No masking required.

A29r shunting beet wagons at Glen More. It seems like I spent any spare moment today running this stunning model back and forth across the layout.
