Dempsey Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Airfix 1/600 HMS Hood model kit for a nice change of pace. Maybe I'm looking at this through the eyes of the 12 year old I was making the last kit I got from Airfix but I don't remember the being such issues with fitment as you can see. Here are some pictures of the progress so far. Your thoughts and comments are as always appreciated. 6 Quote

The HMS Hood Association is a very useful resource on paint matching, detail differences, and countless other things useful to modellers. I'm planning on getting myself a Flyhawk 1941 Hood sometime soon, but other projects come first! They usually have specific tips for the different models, such as a the poor fitting problems you mention. http://www.hmshood.org.uk/hoodtoday/models/airfix/airfix600.htm My one bit of advice would not be to go 'crazy' on the rust, especially if you intend on modelling her in the 1920s, the crews were kept busy in peacetime keeping her looking well! Dempsey Posted January 7 Author Posted January 7 While not going for a peacetime look the rusting and even the build up on the lower hull is not finished. The layers are still to be faded back. Thank you for the link, i will look into it. Quote
Georgeconna Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Think the moulding from 1965 has just about had it!! Add a bit of etch, it really pops these boats. WEM 1/600 HMS Hood (PE 616) | White Ensign Models Quote
Georgeconna Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Think the black should go up to this line where the arrow is. The HMS Hood Association says that the depth of the black boot topping was about 8 feet. This equates to 4mm in this scale, which is the distance between the two guide lines on the hull Mind you I like the thinner line. 1 Quote
Galteemore Posted January 8 Posted January 8 Made one of these about 30 years ago after reading ‘The Mighty Hood’ as a kid. Those etches really lift the model, as they provide real finesse. Agreed re thin line, challenging though it was to mask! 1 Quote
Georgeconna Posted January 8 Posted January 8 This is thew Iron Duke, Laser Deck and Etch. These models come out pretty awesome with those. 6 Quote
