Normally, I walk past "N" gauge layouts, after only the merest of glances - except it depicts nice long trains and lots of action (some do!). The smaller ones, I would normally ignore, but NOT this one which was in another league - simply the best "N" modelling I have ever seen.

What attracted my attention was the "Pendon" standard of scenery. Make sure that you look at these full screen. Remember that this stuff is ONE EIGHTH (1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2) the size of "))".

There was even a STATION!!!

For those of you who live on the "Small Island", Pendon is a model railway museum (between Reading and Didcot) whose founder sought to preserve in model form the England of the 1920s/30s - an Australian by the name of Roy England. Just put "Pendon" in your browser and have a look to compare with this extraordinary 2mm railway. I was blown away!

The other layout which c aught my eye was the 4mm scale "Market Bosworth" depicting a LNWR / Midland scene from 1900s. Patrick MAY have competition in station building!

You could even see the luggage in the Booking Hall. Rather nice.

The rolling stock was just as wonderful! Sorry, in my rush to get off to visit a friend in hospital, I forgot to photograph the trains!

Thanks for those wonderful photos Leslie. Inspiring stuff, such fine details reproduced on such a small scale, and conversely wonderful to see such detailed scenes executed on such a grand scale. A vanished world recreated, this is where my interest in modelling is increasingly focusing.

Used to visit Pendon regularly when I lived in London/The Home Counties 30 odd years ago, how time flies!

Chiltern Green & Luton Ho set the standard of what could be achieved in N Scale/2mm modelling a railway in the landscape over 40 years ago, the Model Railway Club Copenhagen Fields followed on by applying the same principals in an urban/inner city setting modelling the approaches to London King's Cross complete with North London Line and a section of the Tube!

I think the quadruple Midland main line in the background on Chiltern Green was modelled in N Gauge while the single track LNER Dunstable Branch through Luton Ho in the foreground was modelled to the more accurate 2mm scale standards (to the correct gauge).

I used to regularly drive under the viaduct and cross the trackbed of the abandoned LNER branch while driving to work in Hatfield about 30 years ago, then still a very rural area despite being between the large towns of Luton & Harpenden

Most interesting John. From 2015 to 2023 we lived near Aylesbury and regularly visited Luton. My younger son was obsessed with buses (he’s currently restoring an ex Dublin Olympian and our house is full of Dublin Bus moquette fabric). So we often used to go to Luton and ride the Dunstable portion of the Luton Hoo line -  now converted to a guided busway! The MRC’s Copenhagen layout is a beast, with some very clever modelling
