The Bandon tanks, unusually enough aren’t well photographed out this direction. thought it was interesting as the area of Dunkettle has changed so much since too 1
Mol_PMB Posted Wednesday at 19:15 Author Posted Wednesday at 19:15 My impression is that the Bandon tanks weren’t often used on west Cork passenger services at this time. The Ivatt tanks gave way to diesels. Of course the Bandon tanks were popular for railtours which comprise many of the photos but are atypical. 1
cheesy_peas Posted Wednesday at 19:56 Posted Wednesday at 19:56 The observers on the platform appear to be rather more interested in the loco than your average passenger might be, specially arranged motive power for enthusiasts I wonder? 1 1

Can’t remember the details of the 1961 all Ireland tour but I think there was a few trips made that day, it’s in my head that this is one of those trips, where the coaching stock of the tour was swapped for the last of the 6 wheel excursion stock. https://flic.kr/p/2prsHVk 1961 tour https://flic.kr/p/2pwD2UY 468 on passenger duty 53 minutes ago, Mol_PMB said: My impression is that the Bandon tanks weren’t often used on west Cork passenger services at this time. Bandon’s were almost exclusively on goods as soon as Ivatts and latterly railcars took that job. It seems like past the mid 50s, it was far more likely to see a Bandon Tank Working an East Cork Train Rather than West. Seeing as Bandon’s were based out of Glanmire Road at that time and were a preferred station pilot 1

Correct - they weren’t that common on Cobh or Youghal, but that set of carriages is typical for the period. As the disappearance of six-wheelers rapidly accelerated in the very early 60s, Cork still retained a significant stock of them right until the last ones were withdrawn in 1963. Cork had the last operational ones, and many were still kicking about after withdrawal. As such, the IRRS utilised one for an “outing” over the Cork City Railway in (I think) early 1964…..
jhb171achill Posted Thursday at 11:08 Posted Thursday at 11:08 In other news, as Mol will know from his impressively extensive research, in the 1955-63 period, six-wheelers could be seen with what might seem the most unlikely companions. In loco-hauled trains their comparatively diminutive form could be seen with the most modern laminates and Park Royals as companions, as well as tin vans, older vans, older wooden-bodied bogies and Bredins. They just missed the first Cravens, though about half a dozen six-wheeled full van brakes did last into the Craven era. But as well as loco-hauled trains, six-wheelers could be seen tagged on to the back of AEC railcar sets (though never as intermediates). I’ve seen pics of this happening both on the South Kerry and the Harcourt Street line. 14 hours ago, Westcorkrailway said: Can’t remember the details of the 1961 all Ireland tour but I think there was a few trips made that day, it’s in my head that this is one of those trips, where the coaching stock of the tour was swapped for the last of the 6 wheel excursion stock. https://flic.kr/p/2prsHVk 1961 tour https://flic.kr/p/2pwD2UY 468 on passenger duty Bandon’s were almost exclusively on goods as soon as Ivatts and latterly railcars took that job.
