Mol_PMB Posted February 8 Posted February 8 Two emails have arrived in my inbox in the past week advertising some trips in Feb/March. I haven't seen them mentioned on here so I thought I'd just share the info. The RPSI is running a Dublin Connolly to Limerick trip on 28th February, Cravens stock with haulage as far as Thurles by 171, and then an 071 class on to Limerick: https://www.steamtrainsireland.com/whats-on/106/an-sairseal Four weeks later on 28th March, Tailte Tours is running a coach tour of the former West Cork lines with photo stops at key locations, a visit to the model railway village in Clonakilty, and the opportunity to spend all day listening to our very own @jhb171achill recount his tales: https://www.tailtetours.com/event-details/the-west-cork-wanderer-a-bus-substitution-railtour Just what I needed - something to look forward to! I'm planning to go on both trips and may see some of you there. Mol 4

Signal Post Posted February 10 Posted February 10 A pity it clashes with Model Rail Scotland and the Bangor show. Decisions, decisions.......! 1 1
Mol_PMB Posted February 10 Author Posted February 10 Ah, if I had known about the Bangor show I might have tried to fit both in, despite being at opposite ends of the island. But I’ve made all my plans and bookings now. Bangor 2027 perhaps. 1
Niles Posted March 17 Posted March 17 We've a few spots left on the West Cork Wanderer, @jhb171achill and I are working away behind the scenes on what should a special day out indeed. If you're looking forward to IRM Park Royals (who isn't?) there's a chance to check out two of the real things, 1400 and 1424, at Clonakilty (1400 is actually one of the ones IRM are doing). https://www.tailtetours.com/event-details/the-west-cork-wanderer-a-bus-substitution-railtour 3
Westcorkrailway Posted March 30 Posted March 30 The West Cork Wanderer was a great day out, met some forum members here, weather was good and despite 2 very large delays out of the control of tailte, still arrived back in Cork in time for the 18:25, the 1961 tour to West Cork don’t make it back until past 12AM after its delays! 4
Signal Post Posted March 30 Posted March 30 (edited) That's a great photo. The "tour within a tour" was absolutely fabulous too! Those of us lucky enough to be sitting close to @Westcorkrailway on the bus were treated to a wonderful supplementary commentary on the CBSCR based on his absolutely encyclopedic knowledge of the West Cork lines and of what remains of it and a walking tour of lesser known (railway associated) parts of Skibbereen during the lunch break. I doubt if there's a single ex CBSCR sleeper in West Cork that he doesn't know the location of! Thanks again @Westcorkrailway for that, it was great meeting with yourself, @Mol_PMB and others from here for a wonderful day out. Edited March 30 by Signal Post 2 1
Mol_PMB Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 Absolutely! A pleasure to meet you too and Cathal’s deep knowledge of the subject was a real bonus. Once I’m home and have sorted my photos I’ll upload a few here and on other relevant threads. There are some very modellable stations on the West Cork but I need to get my current project finished! 1
Signal Post Posted March 30 Posted March 30 Given your wonderful model-making skills I shouldn't be surprised to see a 4mm Paddy the horse make a cameo appearance soon.... 2

Westcorkrailway Posted March 30 Posted March 30 There is an unreal shannonvale layout, I posted it on here a few months ago 50 minutes ago, Mol_PMB said: There are some very modellable stations on the West Cork but I need to get my current project finished! As has been said before, the beauty of modelling West Cork is you can have prototypical length trains in reasonable space. maybe next time we will do Cork Capwell, Kinsale, Courtmacsherry, Timoleague, schull, Ballydehob Bantry and Drimoleague for more insperation 2
Mol_PMB Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 We need IRM to announce the C class! in the meantime I’ll keep building other stock that is suitable. One of the great things about Saturday’s trip is that with photos like the one above, I can mentally place them in the landscape I’ve seen with my own eyes. 6
Westcorkrailway Posted March 30 Posted March 30 As a follow up, here are photos of where we were in 1961 first is Chetwynd viaduct Bandon (High level) Clonakilty Junction Ballinascarthy LC Skibbereen footage of bridge in use https://www.rte.ie/archives/2017/0404/865210-west-cork-railway/ Baltimore 4 1
Niles Posted March 30 Posted March 30 (edited) Many thanks to everyone who supported the tour on Saturday, great to put a few more names to faces. An extra highlight was the 'after party' after the tour. With the current restrictions on mainline charters we weren't entirely sure how a 'Bus Substitution' railtour would go down but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Hats off to @Westcorkrailway for his insights and bonus tidbits, I don't think many of us knew of the Churchill connection! @jhb171achill and I are already concocting more tours along these lines (well, different lines, you know what I mean ), so, watch this space... Mol_PMB Posted April 1 Author Posted April 1 A few of my pics showing some different locations from @Westcorkrailway's photos above. I just realised that all the placenames start with B or C, but that was true of nearly half the CBSCR stations! Four at Ballineen: Note @jhb171achill giving the building a stern talking-to for being the wrong colour! The engine shed at Baltimore: Container at Baltimore: My toy trains at Ballinascarthy: Chetwynd viaduct: Clonakilty Junction: Wherever Tailte decide to go next, please can you arrange the same weather? 5
