Moogie-69 Posted October 18 Posted October 18 (edited) Would anyone be any good at identifying GNRi carriages ? All images are of the same train. Any help would be appreciated. Edited October 18 by Moogie-69 2
Galteemore Posted October 18 Posted October 18 Have you got Norman Johnston’s GNRI in Colour? That identifies a few, as does Des Coakham’s Irish Broad Gauge Carriages book. One of Mac Arnold’s ‘Golden Years’ also includes a carriage listing which is helpful.

Have Johnstons book ordered, just waiting on the post. I'll have a look for the other books, thanks.
Moogie-69 Posted Friday at 18:31 Author Posted Friday at 18:31 (edited) I have looked through all my books and I think the second carriage back from the engine is a class K3, could the last carriage be a brake third or something like a third/ goods carriage ? In EM Pattersons book it explains what the classes, K, L, J, ect, means but it doesn't say what the number behind the letter represents. Is there any Web sites or books that explains it better, listing all the classes with dimensions, or is there any carriage drawings available anywhere ? I wouldn't have thought that they would have had a 1st class carriage on a branch line so could the other two carriages be 2nd or 3rds ? Thanks, Noel. Edited Friday at 18:37 by Moogie-69
jhb171achill Posted Friday at 19:08 Posted Friday at 19:08 At least one will be a composite, as all trains had at least some first class accommodation. Any idea when this was - pre-1955, when it was probably coming from Newcastle, or the very last year when trains ran only as far as Banbridge? It's hard to tell at that distance but I'd guess that the first is a brake 3rd with 7ft guard's compartment, the second I wouldn't be sure, but it's older, the third is a composite and the last a brake 3rd. No goods carried in carriages - they would be in goods wagons, and on this line run as a separate train. Looks like you'll need a couple of 0.6.0 SG3 or UG locos and an AEC railcar set!
Moogie-69 Posted Friday at 19:38 Author Posted Friday at 19:38 After a bit of rough measuring, if the second carriage is a K3 at 48ft that would make the following, First carriage - approximately 56ft. Third carriage - approximately 60ft. Forth carriage - approximately 55ft. So, could the first carriage be a K6 ? The forth carriage, Banbridge had a K19 which held 60 passengers and had a small luggage and brake compartment but it was only 43ft 6in whereas the one in the photo is measuring about 55ft. More research required but I'm not sure where to look next.
Mol_PMB Posted Friday at 19:46 Posted Friday at 19:46 There are GNR carriage experts but I’m afraid I’m not one of them. If it was GSWR I could help. @Richard EH perhaps?
