Sulzer201 Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Hi, would anyone have a cheap soldering kit with flux, solder etc? - I just want to run a couple of bus wires around the layout and looking for a basic soldering kit. Thanks in advance. Tom.
BosKonay Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Halfords do a 40w iron that's extremely good for 20 euro last I looked.
Broithe Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Lidl do one for around €10 - perfectly good for occasional use - if they have them in - usually available around twice a year.. Aldi could have similar ones, too..
Sulzer201 Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Hi Broithe, Many thanks for that and I'll keep an eye on their website.

Dave Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Get one of these http://www.ebay.ie/itm/130928385760?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 I have two, they don't burn through tips. 30 watt great for what you want to do. I have used mine all day every day for a week and no problems. All for less than a tenner!
Sulzer201 Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Stephen many thanks for that - I might get one of those - I saw one on the Woodies website for around the same price but think I'd tend for the Halfords job.
Sulzer201 Posted September 19, 2013 Author Posted September 19, 2013 Thanks Dave - there seems to be lots of them on the market.
BosKonay Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 Check for replacement tips too. You'll normally find listings on eBay etc. the tip will eventually wear away so being able to replace it with readily available spares is a must have.
Broithe Posted September 19, 2013 Posted September 19, 2013 The cordless soldering iron that Lidl also do is also rather better than you might imagine - around €9, I think - http://irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/543-Non-standard-bits-in-your-tool-box?p=20006&viewfull=1#post20006 - I've put three decent rechargeable AAs in mine and used it many times. I've subsequently adapted my additional patented wire security clip to hold the couple of feet of solder that I've wrapped round a nail - I spent far too much time looking for that..! Perfectly good for the odd little job.
