    Track Cleaning

Anyone got any ideas how to clean the tracks? Can it be done with meth spirits. It is just the layout "Kilcoole" is DCC and It seems to have taken to stopping. Any advice welcomed.
  3. Love this layout and am watching progress with interest
  4. I have read a lot about the different methods of Ballasting. Diluting PVA etc. I dont dilute just drizzle between rails and on the sides. Whack on the ballast let it dry and brush surplas off with a dry paint brush. Seems to work for me. With the PVA I find less is more. I do not use any cork under the rails or anything like that because initally I was lazy but like the "Clickty Click" of the trains running on the track. I am very careful with points and do not use glue at all just let it fall naturally, ensuring the point mechanism is not hindered in any way. If you look at my pics of Kilcoole you can decide for yourself if this is ok. Just thought I would throw my tuppence worth in.
  5. The vending machine is paper and can be downloaded from http://www.wordsworthmodelrailway.co.uk/railside.html for FREE. If you want to take it a stage further a 3mm or 5mm led will light it up just like the real thing. This is a very simple but effective project and virtually no cost. The attached photo shows how effective it is when lit, or if you prefer it does not have to be lit but I like it lit seems more real
  6. http://www.modelrailwayscenery.com/building-kits/ Easy to build when printed off and can make as many as you want. I have posted photos of ones I have made from this site. Great Value and good detail. An idoit can build this. lets face it I DID!!!!!!!!!!!! Some of the other buildings on the website is good as well. I am all for saving money. This can be an expensive hobby, but with a bit of thought you can save on accessories.
  7. some more - cocktail sticks and aluminium mesh from halfords make great fencing. Also http://www.wordsworthmodelrailway.co.uk/index.html is a free site for downloading accessories for model railways. You do need to be able to print off the things but good quality.
  8. Guys what do you think of the level crossing. I know the purists among you will cringe but has anyone any better suggestions. barriers are not an option
  9. this is a pic of the finished platform.
  10. No the cable trunking is bits of mounting card leftovers which I trimmed and glued to base, then when I ballast it looks ok. A lot cheaper!!!!! I also used the photo mounting card to make some of the platforms. Again cheap and the card was bought from Easons and I have found a multitude of uses. It can be bought in different colours as well. In that picture you can see the platform is made from the mounting card. It is a great way to make platforms and is cost effective and is as strong as anything you will get
  11. Here are some pics of the layout early days. This gives you an idea of the space I have to work with
  12. Thanks Kirley. I am just developing the layout as a natural progression. The problem is space. I have a room but when you start you find you have less space than you think. Most of the buildings are Metcalfe as I find the detail is excellent and you can adjust to suit. The lighting is mostly LED strips added to the buildings during construction. The use of LEDs in the building ensures safety as they give out very little heat. The lamps are wheat grain lamps bought of ebay. As I get used to this forum I will post more detail if required. Thanks guys for the welcome. I look forward to picking your brains. Not sure how big the layout was had to go and measure it 4ft x 7ft
  13. Mostly evening shots. Stock at the moment is not great. I am getting to grips with the language for this hobby. 2-CIE Diesels 1 Class 47 1 DMU and various open goods wagons + 4 Pullman mk1 coaches. Hope that is right.
  14. Thanks Rich. I hope there is not too many photos. Personally I like to look at other peoples layout photos it is a great way to form ideas for my own layout.
  15. Hope this is ok Please feel free to comment +ve or constructive
  16. Hi Everyone My name is Kevin and I have started back in oo gauge railway modelling on a layout I am calling "Kilcoole" I don't know why but that is what seems to have emerged. I have not done this since I was a boy and now at the ripe old age of 56 I have set aside a room now my kids have moved out and started work. I will be asking questions so please bear with me as they will be stupid but I hope in time I may be able to contribute. I am going to see if I can upload some photos of my layout. I hope the photos have uploaded and if the have let me have your thoughts and opinions. Cheers
