The rail service, then known as the ‘Arrow’, began operating on May 16 1994, a date that also marked the reopening of Sallins, Hazelhatch and Clondalkin stations along with the opening of a new station at Cherry Orchard. To mark the occasion I've put together a photographic collection of the route over the last 20 years. Click to view. Here's to another 20 and beyond! Enjoy, The Wanderer.

  19. While London used to be my haunt in the 1980's, it was a trip to Stratford in 1987 shortly after the opening of the DLR that sticks in my mind. On that day the Network Thamesday on Saturday 12th September 1987 took place on the Southbank of the River Thames (see http://www.srpublicity.co.uk/nse/nse08.htm). After visiting the South Bank, my mother took me down to Tower Gateway for a trip on the two week old Docklands Light Railway to Island Gardens and then Stratford. At Stratford we said goodbye to Mum's friend and her son (who lived nearby) and got a 2EPB on the North London Line back to Richmond to get home. My memories of a rather windswept and rundown Stratford Low Level while waiting for the 2EPB to come from North Woolwich are a massive contrast to what Stratford is today. Those platforms are now part of an expanded DLR, next door is the Jubilee Line and the whole area has been transformed by the biggest sporting event in the World. Time stands still for no man
