  1. I have plenty of un run locos out of warranty.
My main issues have been with items that have arrived with some damage. A bus, a vehicle, an A class despite the superb packaging, possibly some items that remain unopened as such. To keep this in perspective, given the sheer number of things I have purchased the percentage of items is very low. That said, the ‘resolution’ has been mixed. The vehicle was replaced, was offered a paltry few euro off the bus (didn’t bother to take time to respond to that offer) and was asked to stick the bit back on the A class with a bit of glue. I feel that this side of the business is lacking by comparison with the research and quality that goes into the production. I’m not sure I’d bother with a warranty issue unless a bogie headed down the track by itself or the loco decided to have a BBQ in the engine room. As for spurious claims and chancers, an individual’s account with the company would show the items and cumulative dollar amounts purchased by someone as private purchases (most resellers are known to most of us and certainly to IRM themselves), so a matter for the company to weigh against past and future goodwill.

Damn it, I could have commandeered a speedboat while doing the colonies last night and done some late-night pirating!

    Arrrrrrrrr!

    Now I see them!

My buddy, a boats captain, saw all my stock a couple of weeks ago 😱 so he’s in when the NIR stock is coming by.

My money is on a 30 ton van.

I could certainly do with one, or two or….

just got some 20T from @Mayner but tbh I could even find a use for a 10T for early stuff too. There were many iterations of wooden vertical and horizontal off the top of my head plus various duckets and paneled sheet versions

  4. Hopefully he can now devote himself to a re-run of the Atlantean Ds in navy/cream 😂 Tbh  received two of these in tans from Derek ( incl. Ringaskiddy) but would love some navy cream especially with Cork routes from schooldays. No 8 or even No5 would be an instant purchase

Intensive pilgrimage travels to the Holy Stone of Clonrichert would have kept the line open.

Knock managed to get an airport from a similar set-up.

It would have had a strong freight service to ferry the roads back and forth to the east side of the island for storage in inclement weather, transporting the impermanent way so to speak. A ‘lifting train’ would have been necessary of course

This just popped up on my email so I thought it might be of interest, various pre-owned MM stock at Rails of Sheffield:

Seems like these always pop up when someone in the know is offloading to make way for newer stock. Rails has never been particularly cheap with used stock either , that’s about $320 at the moment

A mystery solved, there is a 1969 Tom Wall photo of 24401-24515 series Ballast Wagon 24514 in the IRRS Flickr album https://www.flickr.com/photos/irishrailwayarchive/51907052281/in/album-72157661623942928/  The photo is copyright and the download option is disabled.

The wagon is a 2 plank dropside with tapered steel end stanchions, the traditional Irish wooden underframe betrays its origin as a cattle wagon.

Interestingly the body (sides and ends) are painted red on a grey underframe, the wheel logo is positioned near the centre of the body.

There is also a photo of an older version of the 'Ballast Wagon" loaded with sleepers, sides removed and offcuts of rail used as stanchions,

Possibly a new wagon for Leslie, all my wagons run on the steel versions of the "Standard' underframe.

    I konw

I know the photo you’re  referring to, the color scheme seeming quite out of place with any other opens or flats even as a PWD

Gawd be with the days when you’d lines of wagons, horse boxes, and the back platforms, and a few “A” class sitting with ferts or bubbles waiting to go somewhere……. and there was a Limerick - Rosslare passenger train with a 141 and up to five laminates and a tin van….

It’s actually quite shocking how underutilized Irish railways are

We will of course, as well as a new run of A’s as well as a whole list of powered and unpowered models to come

I bought a substantial number of As based on the variety of liveries making a  rerun unlikely in the near term. Unlikely to buy another and would keep further funds for better variety in the forms of B class, the long-lived early CIE stock, early rail cars or a steam locomotive(s)

Its actually inside the wall of Kent Station and not on the Quay. All tracks along the Quay did not sit proud of the road. The wall in the background is part of the old coaling bunker that was later knocked to make way for the Water street container embankment and after that the cement silo.

Quite right Its inside the wall rather than outside which would have been flush to the asphalt

Above is a joe st ledger film from the IRRS archive posted online by Ciaran cooney. Looks like E429 did make it to the waters edge! But I think your location is correct @scahalane

Yes indeed this is the location I was thinking of but scahalane having modeled this area extensively is quite correct on the previous photo location

most of my photos of the ford cork operation are not digitised. These are a few more shots of the area. I’m sure many people get a taste on what ran on these trains.. ivatt shunter 201, 207 or 208 was often down here as were J26 Ex MGWR locomotives. The bandon peckett 495 was purchased by the GSR for cork city railway use. Though more for the tight curves of some sections. Arigdeen, St mologa, 100 and 90 ect would have also run on this train. As you can see above even the original E401 class ran in the cork city railway.

Some cars would go down the bandon system, but most of them headed across the rest of the city railway to Kent station. And up the mainline. Ford traffic continued after the fall of the west cork railway. 1966 is reported to be the last time a ford car went to Kent via the cork city railway/Albert Quay but by this stage, cars were taken over to Penrose quay and loaded from there (likely the case in the 4th photo)

One night the ford train was left in Albert quay. All the hubcaps were stolen and from that time all the hubcaps were locked in the cars overnight

something worth noting that ford were seriously considering opening a factory in Ballinascarthy. much much bigger then then one in Cork. Locals blocked it though. I often ponder how that factory could have saved the West Cork railway!

Are you able to date these for me? (year)

I’m one step ahead of you there JB. A certain man who worked for Fords down here donated these. Two zephers and a 100e anglia….maybe a very small 3 car rake is in order….

Alright, you're 1/3 of a step ahead as I don't have the red Anglia lol

    1.  The view of E429 - where exactly is that?

    2.  "....linked to the old Cork & Blackrock railway..."   - No! While it's close to where the original broad gauge City Quay terminus of the BROAD gauge Cork, Blackrock & Passage line was, it was never "linked" to it; what I suspect they mean is that it's linked to the former Cork and BANDON railway line.

    Newspapers, eh...........!

It's outside of Kent Station on the south side, Horgan's Quay. Rails from Cork Yard extended over the Quay road to 2 or three sidings right one the waters edge.

If you go to Google Earth, find Kent go south to the key there a big excavator sitting on the rails

The Anglias are recognisable from their distinctive radiator grilles (my Dad had one in the late ‘60s).   The others are Populars/Prefects and the larger 4-door Consuls.

I didn’t realise that the Cork factory was the first one that Ford opened outside the US.

    Cheers

It was the last one to bear the name Henry Ford & Son Ltd. rather than Ford Motor Corporation

The coach sides are available to order 6-8 week lead time.

I need to quote for each individual order as they are shipped direct from our supplier in the UK rather than a stock item

I recently supplied GSSGV sides and detail overlays for £40 plus shipping

John, is there any coach or kit that is currently available that would work well with these, the original 60' kit intended to work with your overlays is OOS

  15. If I understood correctly there is rumor of a steam offering from IRM. This will tell you all you need to know about the future of modeling 21mm

    On 7/10/2023 at 1:03 PM, mfowler55 said:

My goal in railway modeling is to achieve a visually realistic representation of the prototype, within reasonable - and somewhat flexible - constraints of time and cost. As a newcomer to Irish prototype modeling, the 20% or so gauge compromise baked into OO scale/1600mm gauge has come as a disconcerting surprise, to say the least.

Modelers ARE a handy and resourceful lot, but it seems good business for model railroad manufacturers to work to increase the appeal of the hobby. I understand the need for making the business case - but that case was been made years ago with the decision to serve the limited market of Irish prototype modelers.

I will enthusiastically support 21mm RTR products. A workable trackwork selection could be as basic as #4, #6 and wye points, 1-metre flex-track sticks and perhaps 60- and 90-degree 'X' crossovers.

Rolling stock is relatively simple. We would need RTR or user-convertible 21mm trucks (bogies?), axle and wheelsets.

21mm motive power would be more of a problem. Steam locomotive cylinders, crossheads and guides, linkages and valve gear would require redesign and retooling. Diesels need regauged power trucks. Chassis clearances and fitting need to be checked. Still, I should think the limited number of Irish prototypes works in favor of feasibility.

I encourage manufacturers to support OO scale modeling that is accurately gauged to represent the characterful Irish broad gauge. I will back those efforts by purchasing their models in the future.

I wonder if we'll see any IRM or Accurascale madness this weekend...

    The big question is:

    Accurascale or accurascale?

Do you mean ACC-ura-scale versus a-CURE -a-scale? I had assumed the company was named for the accuracy of its models versus being a CURE for model manufacturing. The railway magazine hosts seem to favor the latter pronunciation 🤷‍♂️
