I'd say the Warship is probably the best of the MTKs so far. It seems less misshapen than the others.

A couple of years ago I accidentally came into possession of most of one MTK kit that I didn't even know existed, as I'd never seen it in any of the catalogues available when Colin Massingham was active. It claims to be for the WD 2-8-0 and is predominantly etched brass.

The instructions refer to both the 2-8-0 and 2-10-0 variants and bears the name "Elcrappo", which Colin notoriously gave to his range of 7mm scale kits - this WD is however supposed to be 4mm scale, so the artwork may have been "shot down". I have no intention of trying to build it  as I already have a Dave Bradwell WD, which is at the opposite end of the extreme when it comes to quality! I might use bits of it in to make a 2-10-0 as I've not seen an etched one built.

Very nice - I am always impressed that you can see the potential in something Darius when it would be very easy to write it off, great work every time!

Thanks Patrick.  I get the most satisfaction out of rescuing and restoring a model that would otherwise have been discarded.

Light weathering to finish.

Not yet.

MTK LMS coach repurposed as a UTA (ex NCC) coach.

White metal coach ends cleaned up and glued in place. Plasticard strips used to reinforce the joints..

“Standard” chassis made from plasticard sheet and Plastruct angle sections.  I used the MTK trusses but replaced the MTK bogies with Bachman LMS bogies.

The man never stops!  Nice smooth finish even with just the primer.

I'm always in awe of his rate of progress, and how he turns such unpromising components into a great looking model.

I almost wish I hadn't binned my MTK Irish coaches some years ago; I could have a go at rebuilding them to a better standard. But sadly life changes left them in a landfill somewhere.

Obtained from eBay and in need of some tlc.

The body is mounted on a Lima chassis that has been modified to kind of fit…

IMG_5857.jpeg.dfa53e5858bbcab26b77e78f999e842c.jpeg

The chassis is longer than the body - one of them must be wrong…

In any event the chassis will need to be shortened to fit so that the fronts of the bogies don’t stick out past the nose.

Some of the roof parts are sitting too high.

These parts were held in place by single dabs of solder, which were carefully ground away using a Dremel enabling them to be easily removed from the body.

Sanding and fettling followed to improve their fit.

Fettling, filling and sanding.  The original paint finish must have been brush applied judging by the finish.  I filled the gaps and sanded them along with the paintwork generally.

I added strips of thin plasticard at cantrail level to provide a neat roof to bodyside interface.

One coat of primer later…

Now that has to be one of your biggest challenges to date….

Actually this is fairly straightforward.  The hardest one was the Class 55 - straightening up the original banana-shaped body was certainly challenging.

Roof fan aperture drilled out.

I used an A1 Models etched Class 37 grille - after all it’s an EE locomotive.

I also added A1 Models etched horn grilles to the nose.

The Lima chassis had been somewhat hacked about but needed further modification to enable it to fit properly.

The main issue is the chassis being 6mm too long for the MTK body, which necessitated removing a 6mm slice from the centre and rejoining the subsequent chassis halves.  Plasticard stiffeners were also glued in place.
