A couple of years ago I accidentally came into possession of most of one MTK kit that I didn't even know existed, as I'd never seen it in any of the catalogues available when Colin Massingham was active. It claims to be for the WD 2-8-0 and is predominantly etched brass. The instructions refer to both the 2-8-0 and 2-10-0 variants and bears the name "Elcrappo", which Colin notoriously gave to his range of 7mm scale kits - this WD is however supposed to be 4mm scale, so the artwork may have been "shot down". I have no intention of trying to build it as I already have a Dave Bradwell WD, which is at the opposite end of the extreme when it comes to quality! I might use bits of it in to make a 2-10-0 as I've not seen an etched one built. 1 Quote

Patrick Davey Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Very nice - I am always impressed that you can see the potential in something Darius when it would be very easy to write it off, great work every time! 1 Quote

Thanks Patrick. I get the most satisfaction out of rescuing and restoring a model that would otherwise have been discarded. Light weathering to finish. MTK LMS coach repurposed as a UTA (ex NCC) coach. White metal coach ends cleaned up and glued in place. Plasticard strips used to reinforce the joints.. “Standard” chassis made from plasticard sheet and Plastruct angle sections. I used the MTK trusses but replaced the MTK bogies with Bachman LMS bogies. Roof detailing next. Cheers Darius Edited January 16 by Darius43 4 Quote

I'm always in awe of his rate of progress, and how he turns such unpromising components into a great looking model. I almost wish I hadn't binned my MTK Irish coaches some years ago; I could have a go at rebuilding them to a better standard. But sadly life changes left them in a landfill somewhere. 1 Quote

Darius43 Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 MTK locomotive roster. Classes 40 and 44 to follow… Cheers Darius 3 Quote
Darius43 Posted Saturday at 14:20 Author Posted Saturday at 14:20 Obtained from eBay and in need of some tlc. The body is mounted on a Lima chassis that has been modified to kind of fit… The chassis is longer than the body - one of them must be wrong… In any event the chassis will need to be shortened to fit so that the fronts of the bogies don’t stick out past the nose. Some of the roof parts are sitting too high. These parts were held in place by single dabs of solder, which were carefully ground away using a Dremel enabling them to be easily removed from the body. Sanding and fettling followed to improve their fit. Cheers Darius 3 1 Quote
Galteemore Posted Saturday at 15:17 Posted Saturday at 15:17 Now that has to be one of your biggest challenges to date…. 1 2 Quote
Darius43 Posted Saturday at 16:16 Author Posted Saturday at 16:16 Fettling, filling and sanding. The original paint finish must have been brush applied judging by the finish. I filled the gaps and sanded them along with the paintwork generally. I added strips of thin plasticard at cantrail level to provide a neat roof to bodyside interface. One coat of primer later… Cheers Darius 2 2 Quote

Actually this is fairly straightforward. The hardest one was the Class 55 - straightening up the original banana-shaped body was certainly challenging. Darius43 Posted Saturday at 17:17 Author Posted Saturday at 17:17 Roof fan aperture drilled out. I used an A1 Models etched Class 37 grille - after all it’s an EE locomotive. I also added A1 Models etched horn grilles to the nose. Cheers Darius 4 Quote
Darius43 Posted Sunday at 11:32 Author Posted Sunday at 11:32 The Lima chassis had been somewhat hacked about but needed further modification to enable it to fit properly. The main issue is the chassis being 6mm too long for the MTK body, which necessitated removing a 6mm slice from the centre and rejoining the subsequent chassis halves. Plasticard stiffeners were also glued in place. The body now fits a lot better than before. Cheers Darius 5 Quote
