I hope this is of use. Any comments, corrections or additional information would be most welcome.

 

Areas already identified for improvement, but awaiting more time and/or data, are as follows:

  • Hyperlinks to connect the entries where vehicles have been rebuilt/renumbered
  • More links or references to published photos of each carriage
  • More information on inherited GNR carriages (weight, body, underframe, bogies and withdrawal dates)
  • Review of consistency where vehicles have been reclassified without being renumbered
  • More detail on the list of references

Many thanks all.

Extra thanks to @seagoebox who has sent me copious information on the former GNR carriages which will help me add detail to those entries.

It will probably be a few weeks before I issue the next draft, there's plenty more work to do and I have a holiday to enjoy as well.

With the addition of some photos and editorial this has a little reference book written all over it, like the Doyle & Hirsch reference books, the earliest of which was in 1979 with limited reference only to stock existing before that time.

And the GSR didn't help when they absorbed the MGWR stock, simply ending up with a dozen different carriages numbered 1M. It doesn't help that the MGWR seems to have had an obsession with modifying carriages between firsts, thirds, compos, brakes etc, renumbering each time in the appropriate series. The GSR continued modifying them and the number series just becomes a very confusing mess.

Dare I throw in also the fact that many, many vehicles were rebuilt throughout their MGWR career - before the GSR was even conceived - and in some cases to a completely different specification with a new number! And - in some cases more than once.... And - once the GSR took over, this continued! One old 6-wheeled full brake that I know of was rebuilt by the MGWR with its "birdcage" removed, then in GSR days rebuilt again as some sort of unique looking yoke, the bodywork looking vaguely more GSWR-ish than Midland. There was also a six-wheeled passenger brake on the Loughrea line in the 1930s of a design I've never seen anything like. It appears in two old photos, very unclear in both. I'll try to find a pic of it, but it will be in my forthcoming book on the line and I may have already sent the original to the publisher.

Not just the MGWR stuff - the GSWR stock was also subject to such vagaries.
