Hello all

Does anyone happen to know why NIR purchased coaches 752 and 753 from BR, along with so many other MK IIs in the '80s? In addition, is anyone aware of when the two DVTs were built?

If I understand your question, 812 and 813 were 66 ft 31-seat Driving Brake Open Standards built originally by BREL in 1969 as Mk2Bs and converted to air-braked push-pull fitted by NIR but I am not sure when the conversion occurred …. which may have been your actual enquiry. Not sure if that helps

Thanks very much, both. Sorry, I wasn't very clear, I meant the building dates of 752 and 753 - but that info is very useful as well :D

Were members of the original enterprise MK II fleet scrapped after the new ones were purchased? Were they in bad need of replacement or what?

752 was a 66 ft 75-seat Driving Trailer Open Standard built originally by BREL (Litchurch Lane Works, Derby) in 1969/70 as Mk2c on B4 bogies and originally BR TSO 5516

753 was a 66 ft 62-seat Driving Trailer Open Standard built originally by BREL in 1969/1970 as Mk2c (BR TSO 5498)

These were 80 Class driving trailers, not Enterprise stock. DiveController has detailed their building dates. As to the 'why' part of your query - they were bought to replace 741 and 748 which were damaged during the troubles.

As outlined above and also NIR expanded the fleet when they bought 111,112 and 113. They needed an extra set of coaches

741 and 748 were withdrawn due to fire and bomb damage, but were built by BREL in 1974. That being the case, presumably 1974/5 would be the earliest that the DTSOs would have come into service with NIR after 5-6 years in service with BR

111 and 112 went to traffic in Feb 1981, 113 in 1984

DTSOs 741 and 748 were part of the second batch of 80-class railcar sets, ordered by NIR in 1975 and put into service 1977/78. They were built new for NIR by BREL and did not see service with BR. 741 was introduced in Jan 1978 and was withdrawn following a fire bombing at Finaghy in Sept 1979. No 748 was introduced in May 1978 and was withdrawn following a fire at Crumlin in May 1979.
