Peter Posted November 20, 2016 Posted November 20, 2016 Can anyone recommend train journeys they have taken? I have been on the Glacier Express, Bernina Express, ICE around Switzerland, taken the train up the Jungfraujoch, reunification express from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, TranzAlpine in New Zealand. I'd love to take the Californian Zephyr across the US.
Mayner Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 We rode the California Zephyr from Denver to San Fransisco the crossing of the Rockies and Sierra Nevada are both in daytime.
Jimbo325ci Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I did the Transiberian Railway in 2004. Started in Moscow, stopped in Irkutsk, Siberia, then Mongolia and finally Beijing, China. Unbelievable experience.
WRENNEIRE Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Try the DART on a Saturday night at about 11ish Doesn't really matter what direction you travel, results will be similar Don't forget to tuck your trousers into your boots.......
dave182 Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 Visited Sri Lanka a few years ago, and it has a wonderful British built system that runs from the coast up into the mountains! It's broad gauge, and outside of the main centres still mostly semaphore signalling. Stock is slowly being upgraded to Indian built multiple units, but when I was there 3 years ago there were plenty of diesels, including hunslet shunters, and mixed freights, along with some curious pwd consists. I know I've photos somewhere, maybe on an older laptop, I'll do my best to find them!

Two of NIR's old DH class shunters are in service there at a cement plant owned by Holcim, having being rebuilt and re-gauged.
Horsetan Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 Anywhere on the Swiss rail network, if only to experience services that just... work.

Now that's something I never knew! Thanks for sharing that info. Had crossed my mind to do a small layout with a Sri Lankan theme!

No problem! There's more information on the Irish Traction Group's website, including a photo of DH3 after its rebuild at Beaver Power in Wales: http://www.irishtractiongroup.com/page25.html
