Soldering to copper clad strip

Rate this question

Question

Posted (edited)

I have copper clad strips cut to solder rails at my baseboard joints. The copperclad strip is slightly thinner than the Peco sleepers. Do I pack up my strips or tin the underside if the rails with solder to correct the obvious gap of about 1.5mm.

Soldering is generally more successful with as small a gap as possible, you may find the time and trouble to lift the thin sleepers worthwhile in the end, I suspect.

And it will 'look' better, too.

Yes, that’s my suggestion too. Shim under the copper strip . Might be hard to create a solder bump of consistent height

Suggest you use strong glue, like 5 min epoxy to join sleeper assembly to the baseboard.

The alternative is to use small brass screws, in line with rails and make dummy sleepers to disguise them - three parts: middle and two outers.
