With thanks to Iarnród Éireann, Táilte Tours are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Great Southern Railway in November 1924 with a special commemorative railtour, comprising of a day trip from Dublin to Killarney and back, but with a twist. On the outbound journey we will be taking a quick detour into Limerick Check, marking the first time a mkIV carriage set has operated over this line with passengers (and indeed, a the first ever passenger working of a mkIV set into Limerick). The train will be hauled by a 201 class, now rare visitors to the Kerry and Limerick lines. This tour promises to be a relaxing day out using Intercity standard carriages and with catering trolley service on board, offering passengers the chance to indulge in some pre-Christmas shopping in Killarney while taking in the beautiful sights of the Kerry line from a comfortable express train. For railway enthusiasts, this tour offers are a rare chance to experience mkIV carriages on the branchlines to Limerick and Kerry, with 201 class locomotives also now being rare visitors to these locations. Pick up/set down available from Dublin Heuston, Kildare and Limerick Junction. Full timings will be confirmed in due course, bookings now open at: https://www.tailtetours.com/event-details/the-great-southern-railway-centennial-railtour

And if anyone is in the area on Sunday, Callum will have some of these locomotives in action at the Coolgreany Vintage Day (open 12-6). It's about 10 min drive the Arklow South exit on the M11.

If anyone's looking for an excuse to run magnesite wagons out of region, don't forget some of them ended up stored in places like Enniscorthy and I think Gort in their latter years, and they didn't get there by magic either. In fact while researching the history of my fictional station I discovered some were stored there too in the 90s. Or just, ye know, Rule 1.

Bit of progress installing the inspection pits after work this evening. The messy black is just a base coat over which dirt and grime will be layered so excuse the roughness.

MkIVs are only certified for 071 haulage in an emergency/rescue situation, a 'planned' working such as a railtour isn't permissable unfortunately. (And yes, it has been looked into in the past!) I'm not sure what D.D. situation is officially but there's so few of them that asking to have a set operate tour with one would be moot. As with mkIVs though they can be rescued by 071s.

66 - ying ying... sound they make idling (similar to an 071 or 201). Not a clue otherwise

Very, very much a work in progress between other things. Idea is a small branch terminus, the mainstay of which will be Bo-Bos and short carriage rakes when in Irish mode: Tragreany /Trá na Gréine. (And yes the ballast is to be refined ) When in English mode the nominal name is Sonstrand. The bay platform running at an angle to the 'main' is very much a Tralee-inspired feature. Idea is a runaround passenger terminus with bay, and a few sidings for freight/loco stabling.

Getting type approval for new stock in Northern Ireland comes with its own paperwork hoops to jump through, it would involve considerable expense and manpower to get them certified for what would probably only be occasional use, as @hurricanemk1c points out they couldn't be regularly allocated without compromising the Cork service. (It's been over 20 years since there was an 'anything goes' situation whereby IÉ could stock could run anywhere on NIR and vice versa).

Some shots, inside and out, from a few nights ago. Simple but effective moving "storyboard". Makes a change from reading ads.

Ernies Massive Irish 1930's to 2005 Photo Archive

Interesting that it's still numbered '1001' as late as 1961. -
Oh sorry forgot about this. The '8' appears to be a slightly smaller size than the '101'. Lesson, don't worry too much about getting numbers spot on, the real railways don't.

I was researching this for a non-modelling project which will emerge in the next month or two; from what we can tell the broken logo there for trials but not when they actually went into service. A detail I never really twigged until recently. The sound is iconic, any videos?

The class leader out and about yesterday morning. (Also a little quirk for modellers in this photo, it'll drive your OCD mad).

I quite like this... something new to look out for too.

I'm pretty certain my first rail trip was on a DART from Bray into town... probably about 3 but I distinctly remember thinking they were like 'Daisy' to my toddler eyes.
-
Happy Birthday to the DART, which began operations this day 40 years ago. Personally I think the original sets are still looking pretty spry for 40.

@Cyberbeagle and I spent considerable time researching the subject of how many eau de nil lines the dark green ones carried when repainting 1944 at Downpatrick—the evidence we found suggests only one. And yes, contrary to what many say, a few of them DID carry the dark green (and with 1944/1381 being the third in class, it's quite likely it was one of them).

Mine arrived sain et sauf today too. Now to get a minute to play with them...

A Die Dietrich set carrying invited guests went over it on the day the NCC route reopened (I know someone who was on it). I believe there was a bomb scare which meant it going back to Belfast via Lisburn.

Inverness still has one tootling about as well, pretty certain I saw at least two passing Longsight depot in Manchester a while back too.
