  5. thanks to all who replied , but the award for the 'saint of the year' goes to Broithe! spot on advice - hit f8 straight to safe mode and system restore, that done, straight to the malware site, downloaded the anti mal stuff, 4 bugs detected and removed . laptop now like new! thanks a mil broithe and pass on my appreciation to the tech whiz kid! pints to ye all:cheers: apparently the problem lay with a site called frostwire - so stay well clear of that crap! 7. i found a windows xp home edition cd, not belonging to the acer but can i use this?
  8. lads, this is a computer question (and it railway related - because without the laptop i cant access the site when away from home!!) im told that any computer repair shop could charge up to 150 euros to get it running, and i would rather spend that on the galway liveried coaches! the laptop is an Acer aspire, it was working fine but my young lad had it for a while and now it starts up ok but you cant get on line or play a dvd , in fact i cant access any programs. there is an antivirus software on the machine and it shows all as secure.however there is a security warning on the bottom right of the screen saying 'firewall warning- hiddeen file transfer to remote host has been detected, activate internet security now' i cant access that either. tried system restore , cant access that . can i press any key on start up to activate factory default settings? any help is appreciated!
