I would be tempted to fit a bar or a plate at each end - that you could drop in to stop it sliding out if you don't lift it level....

Same idea, but available in three sizes and has a moulded foam inner (very protective).

 

For those expensive, sound equipped, wired up tender locos, they are the perfect storage option.
