Hi guys, I know this is bait on the late side, but anyone on her know anything about this "explosion" on the Dart !!!

Right there in the article...

The driver sustained injuries when detonators in the driver’s kit bag exploded just before 8.10 this morning as the train was travelling from Greystones to Malahide.

You'll have to wait for the Railway Safety Commission to publish its report into the incident before the reason is known.

Detonators are placed on railway lines by drivers and other railway staff and are detonated by the pressure of a train passing over them, emitting a loud bang which serves to alert drivers to specific issues.

Anyone familiar with when/how these would be utilized more specifically than in the article?

I actually heard and saw these for the first time in a program on you tube "extreme railways" with Chris Tarrant.

The idea of those explosives is brilliant.

If a train fails or otherwise causes an obstruction to running lines (or if a permanent way crew is in possession of the line), a number of detonators are placed at a safe distance away to warn the driver of any oncoming train of the obstruction. On hearing the detonation, the driver should initiate an emergency stop.

Detonators are now kept in the cabs rather than the drivers having to carry them... was a freak accident sadly
