Dave Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 A quick pic of an N Gauge Helix I'm building. What do ye think? Quote
Garfield Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Looks excellent! I need to make a couple of those whenever I get around to constructing my N gauge US-outline layout... Quote
Dave Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 Cheers, I can supply these at a very competitive price in kit form or assembled. Quote
Glenderg Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 Dave, is that laser cut or the tidiest bit of carpentry/joinery i've seen in quite some time? Could one shave with those edges? Quote
Kirley Posted August 10, 2012 Posted August 10, 2012 That was not cut with a jigsaw – let us into your secret Dave? In American videos of ‘how to build a layout’ they refer to using a “cookie cutter” for cutting out all their helix’s and railroad beds – do you have a “cookie cutter”? Quote
Dave Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 No laser or cnc, just a good router and a circle cutting jig I made up. Quote
Dave Posted August 10, 2012 Author Posted August 10, 2012 I'll have it with me in Bray this Sunday at the Toys of yesterday fair. Quote
Dave Posted August 11, 2012 Author Posted August 11, 2012 Here's the trick. I made a compass jig for the router, just cut a square in mdf and mark the centre. Drill a hole in the centre to hold the centre pin of the compass and set your outside radius, then just set the depth and cut, then reset to the inside radius and cut again. Hey presto you got a circle! Then just cut one side and drill the holes for 6mm threaded bar. it takes a bit of setting up. I will have a price list for N and 00 in the coming weeks for the standard radius. Quote

Dave Posted September 27, 2012 Author Posted September 27, 2012 Beautiful job Dave a man to my own heart and i like the extractor pipe on the router. Thanks, when machining MDF you need good dust extraction as the dust produced is as fine as flour. Quote
