Mayner Posted October 29, 2019 Share Posted October 29, 2019 The 4 wheel heating and luggage vans were used on the majority of diesel hauled passenger trains throughout the CIE system from the mid 1950 until the early 1970. They basically ran with all types of conventional coaching stock and are likely to have run with the Craven stock. CIE introduced a small number of 6 wheel heating vans with two boilers in the early 1960s for use on the heaviest longest passenger trains, the 4w vans were withdrawn from fast main line service following the large scale introduction of bogie vans in the 1970, a few continued in use on Dublin suburban trains until the early 1980s. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
jhb171achill Posted October 29, 2019 Share Posted October 29, 2019 Yea, they did run with Cravens, but mostly in the 1960s. By 1970 they were relegated to branch lines after the BR vans were introduced, and in the same branch lines laminates and Park Royals were the norm. Even then, however, up to the withdrawal of the last one about 1976, a train of mixed laminates, PRs and Cravens might still see a tin van occasionally. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It's your railway . Exactly! You can run it with Stephenson's Rocket if you want! Actually, several were still kicking about in the 1980s, one out of use at the buffer stops in Heuston where platform 6 is now, and I think another in Inchicore. Two more, of the ex-TPO style, were converted and would see many years more in the weedspraying trains. flange lubricator Posted October 31, 2019 Share Posted October 31, 2019 (edited) I had seen those wonderful pictures before you can learn a lot from a photo the condition of the van would indicate that it’s on its last legs , the coach next to it has GUARD on the door the guard was possibly using tat a the guards van the 4 w van is there just to provide heat and nothing else .
