jhb171achill Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Vaguely related to modelling... Once "Dugort harbour" is up and running, I am considering ideas for something else. I have tended to grow an interest in the railways of some countries I've visited over the years, especially South Africa, India and Indonesia. Just being back from South America I have seen that there's a huge amount there that isn't hugely known of here. For inspirational purposes, does anyone know of any decent books about the history of the railways of Brazil, Peru, Argentina or Chile? 1 Quote
RichL Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 (edited) Peru was covered by 2 excellent books by Trackside Publications, both now out of print and difficult to get hold of. and one for the southern lines, called rather unimaginatively volume 2. Also a book on the Central Railway of Peru and Cerro de Pasco Railway by (I think) the same publisher. The owner died a couple of years ago or so and I believe the business is now defunct, which is a terrible shame. I am only aware of publications on a few individual railways in Chile and Brazil, like the various Nitrate Railways in Chile. Railways of the Far South is an excellent web site http://railwaysofthefarsouth.co.uk/?LMCL=V3m5qr. but only covering Patagonia essentially. They have also published a book and supplement. There are one or two other good ones, but I can't get hold of the details at the present. I will add to the list when I think of them. This is an excellent one, mainly but not exclusively Central Railway of Peru again... Edited December 9, 2019 by RichL 2 1 Quote

RichL Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Some other publications, including one or two I have briefly mentioned already ( Includes Mexico) (Leopoldina Railway of Brasil) Much of the rest is in Spanish e.g. https://www.ricaaventura.cl/FlipPage/El-Ferrocarril-Trasandino/El-Ferrocarril-Trasandino.html Chile is comprehensively covered in Spanish online eg https://www.scribd.com/document/351444367/Chile-Los-Ferrocarriles-de-Chile-Chile-Central Argentina(mainly recent) is covered by web sites such as Todo Trenes http://revistatodotrenes.blogspot.com/ Quote
DiveController Posted December 11, 2019 Posted December 11, 2019 (edited) Peru (above) Volume 2 is available on Abebooks UK for a reasonable price @jhb171achill https://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?isbn=9781900095365&n=100121501&cm_sp=mbc-_-ISBN-_-new Volume 1 is on Amazon but you probably don't want to know the price (well, double this one) (I'd create a want on Abebooks for Vol 1 if you wish) The book from the website, a little pricey (but I don't know the original cost), maybe worth it to you? https://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?cm_sp=SearchF-_-topnav-_-Results&kn=0992862205&sts=t Will you be needing any GL8 derivatives from EMD for this railway at all? Mayner Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 On the model railway front Frateschi produce a wide range of rtr South American locos and stock including Alco, GE and GM export diesels https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frateschi The narrow gauge lines in Central and South America tended to follow American rather than British or European practice, the Bachmann Big Haulier (G gauge) and On30 ranges are a good starting point for a Central or South American layout, several of the steam locos including the 4-4-0s, Baldwin 2-8-0 are based on locos supplied to railways in Central and South America. 1 Quote
