airfixfan Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 Enjoy the journey and history of this line from the update today on the disused stations website. As a co-author if this work, all feedback is most welcome and a special thanks to Ernie for all his help. 1 2 Quote
Galteemore Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 (edited) Great stuff Jim. It’s a great website, which I have used for many years, and your new material is a very useful addition. Edited December 20, 2020 by Galteemore Quote
NIR Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 (edited) Wonderful, I really enjoyed reading that. I seem to recall my father calling it Foyle Street station. Foyle Road was a continuation of Foyle Street so maybe that was the local usage. There was definitely something of it left in 1972 as I played inside it. Went in through the side entrance and remember bricks strewn around on the floor. At least one of those rounded kiosks near the entrance was still there at that time. airfixfan Posted December 20, 2020 Author Posted December 20, 2020 Interesting as we have photos of Foyle Road being demolished in September 1970 from the Derry Journal. This was to.make room for the new road scheme that became the Foyle Embabkmemt dual csrriageway. Quote
jhb171achill Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 I must have got it just before demolition, then - it would have been 1969 or 70 when I was in it. Quote
airfixfan Posted December 20, 2020 Author Posted December 20, 2020 Thanks we have a photo from the Derry Journal from September 1970 showing the site being cleared. We are are not able to use that photo as it is poor quality so have ordered a new print from the Derry Journal but delayed by Covid! Quote

I have always associated that memory with 1972 but it could have been 1970. Quote
airfixfan Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 The photo wechavecfrom Derry Journal from September 1970 shows the station remains being demolished. Here is the only photo I have which is not good enough for the website. 1 Quote
NIR Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 Interesting, that's not unlike how I remember it with bricks strewn around. My memory would have been in a June or July. Quote
Lambeg man Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 (edited) View of Foyle Road station in 1967: Photo by J.H. Cleary from Feb 1994 Railway Magazine Edited December 21, 2020 by Lambeg man 1 Quote
airfixfan Posted December 21, 2020 Author Posted December 21, 2020 Top photo is of the passenger station being demolished in September 1970 looking towards the City Centre. Bottom photo is of the goods station. Nothing remains except the water tower at the closed and defunct Foyle Valley Railway Museum. Quote
