Limerick to Foynes railway reopening plan
Irishswissernie replied to spudfan's topic in What's happening on the network?
Only to Fort William now as Lynemouth was closed ca 2014. On a brighter note the Alcan Power station which provided the Lynemouth smelter with electricity has eventually been converted to burn biomass and has been re-opened by its new owner. Usually 2 2000 ton biomass trains are railed to the Power station each day from Port of Tyne Terminal when the Power station is 'on-stream'. At present the company is making more money selling the Biomass at Port of Tyne to other Power stations as in the current mild climate demand for electricity is low. Rail shipments and electricity generation are predicted to re-start once colder weather comes next month. -
County Donegal Railways today, I have uploaded 6 as I seem to have a few in the pipeline to go on. Stranorlar 21 April 1953. Van 19, Trailer 3. Railcar 12. Meenglas on shed. Strabane 23 August 1954. Railcar 18. Trailer 3. I have also put a couple of 8 minute Swiss Video segments from October 2003 take adjacent to Hardbrucke station which is on the approach to Zurich Main station The action was non stop with fly shunting, mail , infrastructure and freight trains well in evidence as well as numerous passenger services.. I have added 2 links to the segments. Click on the black picture and it will play.

British stuff from the Catacombs

Ballater ex Great North of Scotland Railway and the terminus for Balmoral. The line actually went further towards Balmoral and was intended originally to extend past Balmoral to Braemar but the line was only completed for a mile or so past Ballater before the project was abandoned. Rumour at the time was that Queen Victoria didn't want a railway that close to the Estate. -

The freight train is at Barmouth and is mainly composed of gunpowder wagons + barrier vans probably working to Penrhynduedraeth for loading. The narrow gauge is the Vale of Rheidol line at Aberystwyth. -

Top one is at what remains of Saltburn station. Coaches were 4 wheeled junk heaps which we had to put up for years on the Haltwhistle to Newcastle line, this particular class (143) were all transfered away from the North East to the South West and Bristol area but their close sisters the Class 142 soldiered on until a few years ago. -

Stirling station I think. -
I had better add some Irish images as a penance for the Scottish one I put on IRM this morning! West Clare Railway, Corofin 4 November 1960, I think the train was shunting a cattle wagon into the siding judging by other views from the same day. Next Newry Edward Street & Goraghwood 24 August 1962. EDITED Clonakilty 5 November 1960. Drimoleague same date.

Back in the early 1980's traffic to Stranraer was still quite heavy with through trains from London Euston as well as Newcastle and the regular service from Glasgow. Here is the overnight Boat train from Euston at Glenwhilly where we used to kip down for the night. I caught the day Euston service one day and the guard told me that the train only had some 64 passengers on it. -

Stranraer Harbour station. Still open today but I think all the ferry services now go from Cairn Ryan on the other side of the Loch, and the Harbour station isn't very convenient for the town being half a mile out on the end of a spit of land. It would make far more sense to build a new station at the old shore end to cater for the town's inhabitants who are probably the only potential travellers today. -
