Identical? 5151 has a door in the middle!

Sean, If you are in Dublin any time, I have a can of RAL2011 which should have enough paint left for you to finish the job. You are welcome to it. Send me a message with your contact number if you are interested. Ger.

Wrenn, Sorry about that, it obviously changed from when I posted it. They were available. Must have been snapped up quickly at that price. Ger.

Just a memory - Phibsboro Modellers Shop

God that brings back memories. My Father used to send me up to Monck Place on the bicycle from Ringsend. Got my Lima J50 0-6-0 repaired when the funnel screw holder snapped. Think it cost IR£5 (EXPENSIVE BACK THEN) to repair. Anyone remember McBirmeys on Aston Quay? Bought my first CIE Class 33 there for IR£10 and as it was near Christmas they had this huge layout upstairs and I got to try out the Loco before taking it home. Also Easons Toy Dept. on the first floor was great for Hornby accessories. Ger. -
Here's the finished D301 well almost. I need to apply some more weathering. Thanks to SSM for the decals. [

Hi Kirley, Just looking at that wiring brings back some nightmares. I know it's probably too late, but some advice for future reference would be to pair up your wires either with cable ties or some tape and label each pair with a number and then make a master list. For example Pair No.1 from CDU1 Terminals 1+2 to Point Motor 1, etc. Just a suggestion. Love the layout. Ger.

Looks like there is a wire from both sides of the Motor Bogie and also the non powered Bogie which are linked up via a small circuit board and fed back to the Motor via the Capacitor. Have a look at this Service Sheet for Class 73 http://www.hornby.com/downloads/locomotive-maintenance-sheets/?page=4. It's the sixth one down. It might take a while to figure out but I don't think there is any lighting wiring. To simplify it, if you joined the wires from Positive side of both bogies to one side of the motor and the same for the Negative wires to the opposite side of the motor, you have in effect 2 wires. They just link them via the circuit board probably to help with DCC. Ger.

Thanks for the comments lads, It makes all the effort worthwhile. Mike that photo was pure fluke and not set up in any manner. Thanks Kirley, great to watch several of these come together on the forum. Hidden-agenda, yes they are working lamps (Weshty has them available on his website) and lastly Sulzer201, unfortunately I haven't made the move to DCC yet. Maybe soon, looking at all the great sound chips available and in use on this site. Thanks again, now on to the D Class. No rest for the wicked. Ger.

Great job, it is hard work. Unfortunately all my LED's broke off, even the replacement ones. They are just too fragile even with a dab of glue on them. Hopefully will have B110 finished soon. Ger.

Kirley, Look at the diagram further down this post http://www.irishrailwaymodeller.com/showthread.php/65-scahalane-s-Workbench/page11, it should help. Ger

These are the links to the only pictures I could find online http://irnirishrailwaynews.yuku.com/topic/1643/d303-inchicore-may-1969 http://website.lineone.net/~sjohnson40/Loco%20Profiles/DClass.html http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?17,2049600 On the third link if you scroll down there is a small pic, but you have to join the website to view it properly. Thanks for the replies lads, just what have I started now though? Dozens of D Class on the Workbench! Ger.

Lads, Anyone got any photos of the D Class Shunters other than what few are available online. Just wondering if both side profiles are identical as I might try a Lima Class 08 conversion in the future. Thanks for any help. Ger.

Just come across this tonight. Myself and my Wife were on the Knockcroghery derailment travelling to Ballyhaunis. We had got married in July of that year and then her Grandfather died on the 07th November. We were travelling down after getting the call at 4am that morning. I remember we had just come back to our seats from the dining car with some coffee and there was an almighty bang. Then there was dust in the carriage and when everything settled the most surreal silence. Funny thing was that I met a guy afterwards who told me that this was his second derailment in a year. Got away from him ASAP:)

Kirley, It's looking good, your working hard. To solve my problem with the tanks I used the one I removed from this chassis originally and cut it down to 22mm before boxing it off. I am going to fill it with Plaster before gluing it underneath to give me some weight. Just for information and nothing else, the prototype Fuel Tanks look to be about 6'6" or 25mm in our world, so Des had them spot on. Unfortunately the Class 55 bogies are longer than what we would require so taking up more space. Not to worry. I like your ladders on the bogies, I had to solder some together from Brass Wire as I had no plastic ones left. Another observation is that with all the weights you are using, will they not be visible through the windows? and also have you room for the Cab? Just my thoughts, keep the pics coming and good luck. Ger.
-
Kieran. Let me know how you fare out with the Fuel Tanks. I have reverted to the Class 55 Chassis due to an accident with the Brass one. Now I am finding that there is little room between the bogies for the Fuel tanks. Ger.

I think the Shapeways (Valve Design Models) ones are all N Gauge.

Lads, The bottom line is that it's not 100%, but in fairness to SSM, they have tried to provide a kit that was not available and unlikely to be made available by anyone else again. It has its bad points yes and I have spoken to Des at length about the shortcomings. I am sure Des is reading these comments and will duly reply. Anyway attached are two photos of the Louvre Grills after priming. Some are OK and some are not, but if they are dirty and weathered maybe they won't be as bad. On the real thing I'm sure some of them would have got damaged over time. I am not taking any sides here, just trying to get on with what I've got and make the best of it. Anthony, I would be interested to see if there is any alternative grills available, or suitable material to place behind an opening. Ger.
