DonderBlitzen Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Hello everyone, Been out of the hobby decades, I would have loved to get back into it when I saw the 071s were released but couldn't justify the expense. Now I can and when I happened upon all the pre orders recently I decided to dive back in. I wasn't planning on making a thread yet but I twisted my ankle so I'm stuck on the couch with nothing else to do. All my old stuff is in an attic hundreds of miles away so I got a cheap set so I could test any locos I buy and practice painting and weathering on cheap stuff I don't care about. Started with the wagon, had never used an airbrush before went subtle to start with. Forgot to take pictures of the tank and loco, decided to paint the van like I've seen in some pictures. Added some Railtec decals to it earlier as well. The set: Really enjoyed the whole process, I don't have room for a layout currently but collecting and painting will keep me going. Bought some cheap second hand Lima mk2b coaches to practice masking, decals and mixing shades of orange on. Stripping the paint, priming and starting on that raised line was as far as I got before the ankle incident. Some great threads here with info I'm drawing upon with these. Cheers, J 8 Quote
jhb171achill Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Very nice weathering! Welcome home! Quote
JasonB Posted December 1, 2023 Posted December 1, 2023 Lovely stuff. Always good, to see new projects being shared in the workbench section. Quote
Gabhal Luimnigh Posted December 2, 2023 Posted December 2, 2023 Nice work and best of luck lad, what kind of airbrush did you use? Quote
DonderBlitzen Posted December 2, 2023 Author Posted December 2, 2023 Got one off bartsharp, model 186 and a compressor. They always seemed to be be out of stock so when they had stock I grabbed them. Quite happy with it. 1 Quote
DonderBlitzen Posted December 6, 2023 Author Posted December 6, 2023 Got the coaches stripped, scraped, sanded and primed. Before I go off on my merry way with masking and painting am I right thinking theses had orange roofs when first introduced? I was going to go off the IRM example pictures of their new stuff but I'm not sure which colour roof came first. The brake coaches came with the lot so I figured I'd use them as the test dummies. I'm also already thinking of getting a separate cheap airbrush just for using with primer, the Vallejo stuff is a pain to clean out. 2 Quote
DonderBlitzen Posted December 9 Author Posted December 9 Over a year since my last post, a new job and living in a few new countries got in the way of hobbies. Been learning fusion 360 while away and now that I'm home for good resin printing. Still getting the hang of it, need to figure out what's causing these odd layer lines, thought it's possibly twisting but they are on both sides. Still, it's a rewarding if somewhat messy process. I have the EGV body in the works as well. The odd shaped bogies are going to be annoying I think, I'm not sure how enjoyable drawing them will be. 5 1 Quote
Patrick Davey Posted December 9 Posted December 9 Looking good! Hope the ankle has fully healed! 1 Quote
LNERW1 Posted December 9 Posted December 9 Wow! Maybe I should drop the hobby for a while and then start again- hopefully it will endow me with your skills! Obviously you have prior experience, but I envy your confidence and, again, skill! 1 Quote

Layer lines (on both sides) particular on models with smooth sides/surfaces seems to be a common problem with desktop printers. It would be worth checking whether there is an on-line Support Group for your particular brand of printer. I ran into similar problems with an Anycubic printer and found their Facebook Support Group helpful. Problem appears related to the lubrication of the slides & screw that raises and lowers the build plate, but was unable to satisfactorily resolve the problem for model railway stock or buildings and use a print bureau for railway rolling stock. Printer appears to work fine for human, animal and fantasy figures with irregular surfaces. 1 Quote

I did indeed find mentioned elsewhere as well that the lead screw and or rails could be the cause, I cleaned and re lubricated but haven't ran the print again yet. Had similar experiences with FDM printers, caused flat spots in the v-rollers. Resin printing is harder to tinker with hardware wise. If it's a bad spot in the rails or lead screw then perhaps increasing the height off the plate to so that the model isn't in that area could work. 1 Quote
