A day in Tampere killing time before the Raskasta Joulua concert that evening in the Nokia arena, with a good mix of Sr1, Sr2 and Sr3 action along with a former German Powerhaul loc. Click on the photo below to view them all

Remarkably untouched from the original SBB Re460 / BLS Re465.

The Finnish trip continues, with a trip from Tampere to Turku, onwards to Helsinki and back to Tampere with a pair of Sr1s, then falling upon the below Sr1 hauled Intercity service (with a failed Vectron on the rear). Click on the photo below to view them all

Day 2 in Finland saw me predominately in Kouvola and Tampere, with a trip to Savonlinna to get between the two. Plenty of freight through Kouvola, and Sr1 action on one of the sleepers. Click on the photo below to view them all

Hi Kieran,

Just looking through this album now, great to see the Fenniarail loco's in action. I'm really happy you got to see their loco 102 also. Do you know anything more about this company, as in what they are hauling these days. They were one of the first private operators in Finland, and I know prior to the war that they had been approved (or were close to approval) for cross border mineral flows between Finland and Russia, across one of the more northerly freight only rail crossings. I believe they purchased 6 locomotives like the 102 to.service this flow.

At the moment they have 6x Dr18s (CZ 774s) and currently the one Vectron but two more due for delivery this year. Their website is an interesting read https://www.fenniarail.fi/en/kalusto, and appears to be doing a lot of timber work. One of the Dr18s derailed in Tampere somewhat recently (track spread) so they seem to be expanding operations around. Makes a change to a constant stream of VR traffic!

The very northern tip of the Finnish passenger network doesn't see many trains, in fact in December it was two each way - the sleeper and a timber. Click on the photo below to look at the loco change in Oulu and services in Kolari

Saturday 15th March 2025:
A Saturday morning trip to Monastervin to capture the latest Iarnrod Eireann retro-liveried scheme to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 201 Class locomotives. 220 has been painted into a near original version of its as delivered livery in 1995 and today was its first working since completion of its overhaul and repainting when it worked the 0940 North Wall - Ballina IWT Liner. A few other bits and bobs feature at Monastervin during the 60 minutes spent there.

Very nice - super photos! I was wondering whether 220 might appear on the Cork services and I'm pleased to see that it has done, just in time for my visit 🙂
