Evening folks,

Three updates to the website tonight.

RPSI / Steam Dreams "Emerald Isle Explorer"

Day 6, Monday, 22nd June, was a day of leisure in Killarney which also includes a short 45 minute each way steam hauled excursion down the branch line to Tralee on the coast, returning to Killarney in time for dinner. Due to the turntable at Tralee not being available, 85 went to Limerick Jct. to turn the locomotive on the triangle.

June 2015:

Updates to this gallery include various photos of 22000 Class on the Mallow - Tralee service today.

The Tralee and Blennerville Railway:

Since my last visit in April 2011 the Tralee and Blennerville reailway continues to decay. The trackbed is starting to disappear under a forest of weeds and in some cases trees.

Hopefully the newly formed Tralee and Dingle Railway Society will succeed in their efforts to bring the railway into operation.

Evening all,

The final Irish leg of the Steam Dreams "Emerald Isle Explorer" operated on Wednesday 24th June. In the morning the tour visited the world-famous Waterford Crystal, before heading off to the station for an 1125 departure to Kilkenny, hauled by 461 where a two hour break was taken. Also at Kilkenny 85, replaced 461 for the final dash northwards across Ireland for an early evening arrival in Dublin for the final night in Ireland.

For todays photos I popped over to Athy for the watering stop and also got the tour at Cush, a few miles north of the town.

Click http://smu.gs/1IzjDlK to view todays photos. For a recap of the parts of the tour I covered since last Friday click http://smu.gs/1LjIUqa

The RPSI operates with a small band of active volunteers and it is a credit to this group of people that they have achieved so much in preparation for this tour, such as refurbishment of the cravens and the daily tasks in ensuring that the tour operated smoothly. Want to get involved? Check out http://www.steamtrainsireland.com/helpingus/ for more information.

A short summery of images from the past several days.

Northern Ireland Railways owned (8)209 has been released from Inchicore works following completion of its cab modifications. The opportunity was also taken to finish repainting it in the full Enterprise livery. The locomotive is pictured at Deerpark, Portarlington with the 0700 Heuston - Cork earlier this morning.

Today we headed to the Scottish Highlands by train and bus.

First of all we headed north to Oban on the 0821 Glasgow Queen Street - Oban / Mallaig. After a short break at Oban we caught the 918 bus to Fort William at 1240, a quick change of bus at Fort William onto the 919 brought us onto Inverness where we will be staying for the next two nights.

Morning folks,

The latest update to my UK travels is from Tuesday. It was a simple out and back from Inverness. We caught the 0702 train from Inverness to Thurso (a mere 154 miles away) before catching a bus to John O'Groats. After a short break there we caught a 2nd bus to Wick before starting the long trek back to Inverness on the 1600 ex Wick. This is the last train from the town each day.

Continuing my UK trip.

On Wednesday, we left Inverness and headed along the scenic railway line to Kyle of Lochalsh. At Kyle we boarded a West Coast Motors (Citylink) bus from there to Portree on the Isle of Skye where we had a break for two hours to explore the town. Later in the afternoon we caught a Stagecoach Local Bus from Portree to Armadale to connect into the 1720 hrs sailing to Mallaig. From Mallaig the next stop was Fort William for a quick change onto the Caledonian Sleeper to London.

Afternoon all,

Pictures from yesterdays Irish Railway Record Society Special from Dublin Connolly to Ballina and Westport has now been uploaded to http://smu.gs/1HCBsT6

3 x 071 Class Locomotives were used during the day with 087 hauling the train from Connolly to Ballina, 078 from Ballina to Claremorris and Westport where it promptly failed with a forward / reverser fault. 084 came to the rescue and hauled the locomotive off the train prior to working the tour back to Connolly.

As always an enjoyable day out, despite the miserable weather conditions west of the River Shannon.

Full Credit must go to the IRRS Program Officer Shane Roberts for organising another successful tour and if the questionnaire handed out about options for the 2016 tour comes to fruition then that tour promises to be a cracker of a weekend.

Also we cannot forget the RPSI and IE staff involved in the operation of the tour and to making it such a great day out.

Also the last of my images from the recent UK trip have been uploaded which has pictures from around London on Friday, plus the flight back to Dublin. Click http://smu.gs/1HCBOJn to view. For all the pictures of the week long trip you can access al the galleries at

Enjoy,

The Wanderer.

Good afternoon all,

Photos from yesterday's Irish Railway Record Society tour to Ballina and Westport, featuring 087, 078 and 084 as well as the normal run of things with Irish Rail. Many thanks to all involved in making the tour happen, even with 078's little problem at Westport! Good evening all,

Due to the earlier failure of the 1300 Heuston - Cork at Cherryville Junction (resulting in widespread delays to all services ex Heuston), the 1620 Cork - Heuston was cancelled, with the 1720 Cork - Heuston formed of 2611+2612+2614+2617, which was all that was available in Cork. Photos of this working at Portlaoise, along with one of the locals and two Down Mark 4 sets, can be seen be clicking the below link
