What is this piece of electronics for?

I was going through the junk box yesterday and found a Lima DMU with this piece of electronics stuck to the underneath of the roof. The DMU is only wired for DC and I'm not sure what this bit of gear does or is supposed to do, the motor is not running.

 

 

 

Anyone know?

Looks like a Hornby Zero 1 chip to me.

Exactly what they are. Hornby's first foray into DCC. It normally says Singapore on the reverse of the circuit board.

I brought the Hornby zero 1 in 1980s and it found locomotives running into bit of problem.

 

Hornby Zero 1 was in catalogue from 1979 until 1985, Slave unit/Modules still on list until about 1990.

 

I still have zero 1 master unit in boxed since.

Was a little ahead of its time, but it certainly had the basics of digital control. None of this 'sound' nonsense anyway
