Grand Canal Street railway works

There is little or nothing left of the works.  They were very cramped, however they managed to turn out a considerable amount of work for the available space and managed to keep the DSER including all the commuter trains running; quite a feat in such a small space compared to Broadstone or Inchicore.

It would make a really good layout given the cramped site and the amount going on!

Could be very interesting to model indeed.

Doesn't even look like theres a proper turntable, I suppose there wasn't a huge need with the majority being tank engines? One may have been installed post OS map, idk either way.

If modelling the 60s and 70s, the canal being jam packed full of rubbish seems to be prototypical

There was 3 turntables, can be seen above on the branch leading to the two story workshops, which had a lift to get stock up to the second floor!

The turntables at that time were only 10 foot long, locos and tenders had to be rotated separately.

Eoin, I saw the small turntables, should've been clearer when I meant a regular TT rather than the mini ones!

Looks like there were 6 turntables at one stage with a another one up the line towards Westland Row on the engine siding.  This would have been opposite the over track signal cabin and there was also a shed, water tower (structure still there) and a pit.  Interesting that none of the turntables shown here appears to have anything to do with the working of the Engine House.  It would make a super model.
