Southern Yard Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 In this image below from 2005 four trains were in the vicinity of Claremorris station and two trains definitely weren't scheduled to be in the station at this particular time and the third generally wouldn't have been, but there was a reason why. Can anyone guess the sequence of events? Quote
Railer Posted May 6, 2013 Posted May 6, 2013 That was covered on the old IRN site years ago. Can't remember but I think the loco on the Mk3 set set failed and blocked the section. The loco was taken off the timber to rescue the Mk3 train while the loco service with the cravens had to hold to allow the late running train to overtake. Could be way off though. Quote

ttc0169 Posted May 7, 2013 Posted May 7, 2013 Ahem-Ritchie...one of those goons at the end of the platform appears to be myself....!!!! Quote
Southern Yard Posted May 7, 2013 Author Posted May 7, 2013 (edited) The timber train parked in the tuam bay got into trouble between Balla and claremorris and it was decided to let the ballina branch set go ahead of the Westport - Dublin service and pushed into claremorris. While this was going on it was decided to let Fridays only Dublin - ballina service proceed to claremorris to cross the Westport - Dublin train rather than in Ballyhaunis. The timber got fixed and went the next day. Made for a lot of activity on a Friday evening. You never know ttc0169 may just model this some day! Edited May 7, 2013 by Southern Yard Quote

Thanks for sharing the photo Paul-after checking my Guards journal for that day which was Friday 22 July 2005,the following locos are in the photo, The Ballina branch loco is 074 with Cravens coaches 1558,1547 and SHV 3173, The 17:50 up Westport Mk3 set was hauled by 214 and had Mk3a coach 6208 in the set, The FO 16:20 Heuston-Ballina was hauled by loco 085 and had SHV 3185,1536,1528,1529 and 1530 in that order, The timber train that got into difficulty on the approach to Claremorris was hauled by locos 175+177, After the Mk3 set departed for Dublin the branch set was moved up to the platform where 074 was uncoupled and ran around the set and then went to shunt the Guinness wagons on the right hand side to couple up to the other wagons in the distance to form the liner later on that night back to Dublin, the Claremorris loco oil two axle tanker is parked in the dock siding and would be shunted out on the following Monday night, Great memories and lots of variety-and lots of potential for a future layout with lots of options available for different eras.....
