Yup true, the request from ATC for a third pass from the A380 was priceless. Almost a Go on go on go on moment. How much would that cost in extra fuel? Fair play to the BA captain to agree.

I always wondered why there wasn't even one annual air show in Ireland.

They cost a hell of a lot of money to stage. Amongst other things, insurance is insane and exhibitors ain't cheap... even smaller jets like the F-86 and Hunter cost hundreds per hour in fuel alone. Military exhibitors, even foreign ones, can cost a lot less as their appearances are often a goodwill gesture, but there's no guarantee you can confirm them, and even if you do, they can often cancel for 'operational reasons'.

A good thing was kicking off with the Air Spectaculars at Baldonnel just over a decade or so ago, but after the last one was held some military operators filed complaints... their maintenance crews found crisp packets and other rubbish stuffed into air intakes after people wandered past the fencing unchecked.

Maybe this sort of event with no public access to grounded aircraft might be an attractive alternative..

The airshow in Salthill used to be an annual event but was stopped, presumably due to 'red tape' issues, and was always a good show! The only annual event at the minute is the Bray airshow which is normally very good, albeit not quite as good as the Salthill event!

The one thing about Flight Fest was that the more nimble aircraft (the Vans team, Strikemaster, Sabre and Hunter in particular) weren't allowed to demonstrate their aerobatic capability. Salthill was great as the flight line was over the sea, so that wasn't an issue, and led to top class acts like the Red Arrows and Thunderbirds appearing to strut their stuff. I also remember Tomcats, Hornets and Vikings showing up the year the JFK docked in Dublin...

Bray is a poor substitute as fast jets can't show off because Bray Head is in the way...

This is interesting - http://planefinder.net/ - if you're ever wondering what's flying over your house.

I had to pick two Americans up from Manchester a few weeks back - I watched them on here and set out as they flew over Holyhead - arrived five minutes after they emerged from the terminal..

Could have been a bit more descriptive with my entry, I was following the Murphy Boat!

Indeed, I just had visions of you being a very early-adopter of computer technology..
