A few photos of two of the 80 class sets hired to Irish Rail between 1987 and the early 1990s (any one know the dates when the three sets returned to NIR?).

69+772+735 at Arklow after the set had been turned so that the power car was at the northern end. AFAIK this was done to to simplify servicing in Connolly shed:

86+767+740 at Dún Laoghaire. Due to slab track repairs on the Up line between Dún Laoghaire and Sandycove, services south of Dún Laoghaire were being operated by a pair of 3-car 80 class sets with a half-hourly frequency using the Down main platform. DART services were operating to/from the bay platforms and the Up main platform:

I'm not sure about NIR's cleaning regime, but they probably would have been put through the wash on a regular basis wile on lease to IR. Some of the photos might also give the impression of the white being whiter than it actually was, as they seem slightly over exposed. I'd agree that the IR logo looks good on them, especially the ones in the red bands on the sides of vehicles. Attached are a couple of other photos.

The sets arrived in October 1987 and were returned to NIR in November 1990.Interestingly,the sets went to IR in the maroon/grey livery just when NIR embarked on their sectorisation programme, which saw the 80 classes being repainted into the suburban livery of red/cream and the inter city livery of blue/grey.Thus,until sectorisation ceased in mid 1991 and all the 80s received the blue/grey livery, there were 3 different livery's to be seen, with the IR logo remaining on some of the units for quite a while after return.

Hunslet, thanks for the dates of their return to NIR. I had turned up the arrival dates for 68+761+737 and 69+772+735 as being 19 October 1987 in the IRRS Journal, but they only gave 'by 3 November' for 86+767+740. Interesting to know that the IR logo lasted on some of the vehicles for some time when back on northern metals.

Josefstadt,I have carried out some more research on the 80 classes that went to IR and found the following information in 35 years of NIR by Jonathan Allen.

Power car 69,intermediate trailers 761 and 772 and driving trailers 735 and 737 were all leased from October 1987 until November 1990.Power car 68 was also leased from October 1987,but returned to NIR in April 1990.

The dates for the other 3 vehicles are very interesting.Power car 86 was leased from November 1987(3rd?) until September 1988 and then again from July 1989 until November 1990.Intermediate coach 767 and driving trailer 740 were leased from November 1987 until September 1988 and then again from March 1990 to April 1990.Hope this is of further help.

Many thanks for turning up the additional info Hunslet. As you say, a complex and interesting leasing arrangement between IR and NIR.
