Wexford70
Could anyone identify this type of lamp for me and its use?
Mike 84C
Level crossing gates? maybe an early point indicator but I doubt it.

Probably an old wall lamp of some sort from outside a house? Senior had one in a shed years and years ago and it wasn't a million miles unlike that yoke. That's what HE thought about that one, anyway.

Wexford70
I think it may be too big for a carriage lamp. Is listed as a railway lamp and I thought it may be a part of a point indicator as @Mike 84C suggests.
minister_for_hardship
Think it may be from a LC gate or ground signal. I saw a pic of one online but can't find it now. Definitely not a horse carriage, not with those red lenses. It looks like it was designed to turn thru 90 degrees to show either red or white to oncoming traffic, white lights were once used in lieu of green to show all clear. If it is stamped anywhere, it's going to be on the oil reservoir or the chimney, usually oppose the seam. Lots of them weren't marked at all though. jhb171achill
What size is it? Hard to tell from original photo in which it looked too small to be a level crossing lamp. With the red lenses, which weren't visible in the first pic, that definitely tends to tie it to some sort of "open / shut" access idea - a level crossing being obvious if it IS railway related. Is it big enough, though?
NIR
A stop signal/level crossing indicator? - red then turn 90 degrees for white https://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/161029-help-for-sign-at-level-crossing-with-lamp-at-broken-brea-level-crossing/ Edited January 4, 2021 by NIR
