  1. MEX - Tank Wagon 207. Owned by - McMullan Bros McMullan Bros own MAXOL. They had a fleet of railway wagons for the transporting their Oil products throughout Ireland. I have a book with a photograph of their wagon 101. The text accompanying this photograph reads; "In 1930, the company upped the stakes again, purchasing tank wagons capable of carrying between ten and fourteen tons of fuel. Some of these appear to have been either built or maintained by Clearance Engineering Company Belfast." This information is from MAXOL -celebrating 100 years - Page 42.
  2. One for The Catacombs? Fifty years ago, yes, can you believe it? If you are unable to recall what happened on a certain section of CIÉ, have a wee LOOK at this link:- https://www.railscot.co.uk/locations/E/Ennis/ HOW TIME FLIES
  3. I bow the thee young Sir, you with the keen eye-sight of a teenager. How I envy you. Wishing you and your team well; and those who are unfortunate enough to have made my acquaintance.
  4. Mallow Station, County Cork. Photograph take on or after the formation of Irish Rail in 1987. The coaches on the right-hand side of this picture are carrying Irish Rail (IR) livery. White band above and below the Central Black band between the Golden Brown. Prior to this the CIE, Super Train livery on the MKii coaches did not have these white lines. Train on left side of picture - Locomotive 011 (A11) in CIE (Super Train) livery with its heating van and two Craven Coaches in CIE livery with a single white line above the windows. The Locomotive in the distance, beyond the Gantry, i cannot se it clearly enough to state its livery - CIE or IR.
  5. What about 2A? CIÉ from 1945 to 1959. A mixture of former GSR maroon (LMS) and CIÉ with two shades of green lined in black and white. If my memory serves me correctly, there were 2600 Railcars in the darker shade of green with a single line of light green below window level.
  6. Noel, My choice for an Irish Oil Wagon would be MEX. This brand name really does represent an Irish Company; Mc Mullan Bros. They celebrating their Centenary as a Limited Company during 2020. Now, branded as MAXOL their locations are found throughout Ireland. "The formal registration of McMullan Bros Ltd on 12th April,1920 came as a direct consequence of a brilliant scoop by William McMullan when he persuaded the Anglo-Mexican Petroleum Company to give his company the exclusive agency to sell MEX Petroleum in Ireland." 9. Wrenneire and Noel, Thank you for your replies. I assumed the situation was, that which you describe in your reply to my post. I made my suggestion on this basis The decoder could have been reprogrammed prior to its installation in the offending locomotive. If so, then perhaps F6 may have been selected in error. Were the locomotive with its decoder to be placed on a DCC Layout the setting could be accesses and appropriate changes made. My very best wished to everyone. I do hope a solution is reached for Michael's sake. I certainly know how disappointing it is when your expectations are dashed. White.
  10. Slow Running I wonder if the cause may be this? The Murphy Models Decoder has a Slow Speed Function setting. When selected this function (F6) significantly slows the speed of a locomotive. The Slow Speed Function (F6) is used to reduce locomotive speeds, and thus, allow shunting movements to appear realistic , as well as allow excellent slow speed running, especially within restricted track areas. If selected, the F6 button, will reduce the fastest speed of a locomotive to something just faster than a slow crawl. I hope this may assist you. White..
  11. GSI345, You may be aware the buses you have modelled had two identification plates on their fronts and one on the bonnet. Corcoran and Managhan, CIE BUSES 1945-1987 has excellent photographs of these and many other classes. A small metal plate with a white background and black Lettering and number AR1, DR1, etc would be attached to a bus of these classes. This plate was was normally positioned above the headlight of the driver's front window and positioned in line with the Eau-de-nil lining on the side of the bus. An identical plate was also affixed to the side of the bonnet at headlight height. Also, a small green coloured plate with the Garage Identification written in gold was affixed on the front of each bus. C,road for Conynghame Road. D,brook etc. I'm desperately trying to recall whether or not the Garage identification plate was duplicated on the side of the bonnet too. Can anybody confirm this? Again, beautiful modelling. For perfection the identification numbers were also shown on the rear of each bus - transfers were used and positioned on the Eau-de-nil band in the central position vertically and horizontally.
  12. Gosh! Lovely models. My memory has been revived by these two model buses. I well remember these two classes of Bus. Generally the ARs ran on the 23 to Ballybough, and the DRs on the 72 to Oxmantown Road. Periodically each class ran on other routes, the AR on 9 or 10 to Donnybrook, the DR on 77?, but in general, they were assigned to the two routes mentioned. My recollection of the Daimler Radiator - colour was Brass. AR1 was follow by a further ten Regent IIIs (AR2-11) placed in service in 1947. I would love to have models of these buses but, my lack of skills would ensure I made a mess of their assembly and painting - so, well done in presenting these two beautiful models for our perusal.
  13. This mornings post delivered my Christmas Card from Irish Railway Models. Through this Forum, may I too wish them Seasons Greetings, and to every member and reader Happy Christmas and best wishes to you too. Please stay safe in this most difficult of time for us all. 14. Murder in Eden is a 1961 British mystery film directed by Max Varnel and starring Ray McAnally, Catherine Feller and Yvonne Buckingham.[1] The screenplay involves the murder of an art critic and subsequent hunt for the killer. Railway connection. There is a brief scene with a Brand New Class 121. How appropriate. Loads of shots of Dublin, Irish vehicle registrations, and believe it or not, the film is supposed to be about Scotland Yard and London. Lots of Irish interest and Actors and Actresses. Enjoy.

  16. The Film - I see a Dark Stranger -includes the following clip of a train arriving at Kingsbridge. Would I be correct in believing the locomotive to be one of our 800 Class? Comments are welcome - One for Mt Beaumont's collection? Please keep safe and enjoy. White.
  17. What about the LNWR carriages running as Dundalk Newry and Greenore stock? Well, I'm going for the LNWR. Their coaches were used on both the GNR(I) and LMS if my memory serves me correctly! Two foot rule, and, It's my Railway. Perhaps, it may also be possible to purchase the correct transfers for this situation? LMS too! Where? - NCC Lines and my imaginary line between Londonderry - Manorhamilton and Sligo (LMS). A joint line shared by three railway companies to prevent the LMS from their proposed outright purchase of the Sligo Leitrim and Northern Counties from the Receiver. CIE, GNR and LMS stock? Now that would allow ones imagination to run a wild mixture of stock!! Best of luck to each of you in these uncertain times.
  18. Gang, I too have been experimenting this evening with the functions on the "Murphy Models 121 Sound Decoder" The information printed on/in the Decoder Packaging is somewhat misleading. It does not cover any of the additional functions to be found on this Decoder. I use Digitrax equipment to control; my model railways - Using the additional function switches 13 to 19 and 20Plus will allow you access to many more features embedded in this decoder. For example F14 will allow you to control the increase in throttle revs, whilst F15 controls the reduction in throttle revs. There are other functions too, rail clack and Guard's whistle are both there, but I have now forgotten their function button numbers. Have a wee experiment - there are many functions beyond those shown on the packaging. And,a very big "Thank you" to a certain contributor on this page for his assistance on how to correctly install this sound chip.
  19. Airfix, Oh! Silly me. Motto:- Check and recheck before one posts! My apologies for having posted inaccurate information.
  20. John, My apologies for the confusion I have created. I cut and pasted from this information on Wikipedia - see below** Another Cut and Paste job - History of Donegal --https://historyofdonegal.com/2012/03/06/lough-swilly-steamboat-company-3-2/ John McFarland was the business brain behind the operation but he ran into difficulties in the early 1900s. First, the occupation of Lough Swilly by the British fleet seriously disrupted trade and destroyed his dream of building up the Buncrana pier to rival Greencastle. Second, a long drawn out High Court case over a relatively small amount of money (£233) taken by Messrs. Russell of Ballyare, Fanad also damaged the business. Russell accused the ferry service of not delivering their goods and mixing up invoices so that other companies received the payment due to Russel. ** The McFarland Baronetcy, of Aberfoyle in the County of Londonderry, is a title in the Baronetage of the United Kingdom. It was created on 23 January 1914 for the Irish businessman John McFarland. He was founder of and a partner in the firm of McCrea and McFarland, engineering contractors, of Belfast and Derry, Chairman of Mulhollands, drapers, and owner of the Lough Swilly Steamship Company, and also served as Mayor of Londonderry. He was succeeded by his son, the second Baronet. He was a businessman, a Senator of Northern Ireland, Mayor of Londonderry, Lord Lieutenant of the City of Londonderry and an Irish Rugby union international. The third Baronet has been a member of the Londonderry Corporation and a Deputy Lieutenant of the City of the County of Londonderry from 1956 to 1982.
  21. Today's Irish Times -14/09/20 For those who have an interest in the longevity of our Transport Companies. McFARLAND, Sir John Talbot Bt; 11th September 2020, peacefully, at his home Glenburn Cottage Ballougry Road, Londonderry. Chairman of Mulhollands, drapers, and owner of the Lough Swilly Steamship Company.
  22. Interesting, informative, history. I read this topic with a great deal of gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives for us. Furthermore, as an Irishman and a former pupil of St Andrews College, Dublin I am extremely proud of John Hemingway and his connection with Andrews. My Uncle, Jack (Ginger) Powell, flew, and trained pilots during the war whilst serving in The Canadian Air Force. He was also a well respected Vet from Nenagh, who, at the age of 95 was still in practice. Long may we remember those who have served on our behalf.
  23. McAllister, Is that you Back-seat driving yet again? Do I hear an indicator clicking incessantly? You really do need to keep your eye on the road! No masks in that Film! Our Nicola won't allow anything up here. Rumor has it, she will announce Farting is to be banned as of Tuesday? Look after yourself and those railway assets you hold too. Fearful registration on that truck - EU - Are those numbers relevant to the year we shall finally leave this institution? Joke Lads - no offence intended to those opposing BREXIT. White.
  24. If you like, you can afford it, you buy it. It is your railway. I have written this in the past - It is your railway and thus, you run that which you you wish to run on it. I have two Irish Layouts. I have LMS Locomotives and Rolling Stock - In my World these are not London Midland and Scottish - they are - Londonderry Manorhamilton and Sligo (LMS) on my railway. South Eastern and Chatham stock - on my railway - Sligo Enniskillen and Colloney or anything else one can think of! Happy modelling. Old Blarney.
