Clogherhead - A GNR(I) Seaside Terminus
Patrick Davey replied to Patrick Davey's topic in Irish Model Layouts
In the late 1950s, the signal cabin at Clogherhead was closed as a cost-cutting measure, as traffic started to decline. The point rodding was disconnected and individual levers were provided for each turnout, along with a small two-lever ground frame for the double slip. Traffic didn’t actually decline all that much and the decision to close the cabin was very much regretted.- 671 replies

I enjoyed the great pleasure of another visit to Loughan Quay this morning, where I met Alan’s incredible BCDR No. 29 scratch build for the first time, folks this model really has to be seen to be believed, none of the attached photographs really do it justice! I am also very grateful to the BCDR management at the quay who arranged for three of their locomotives to line up for a photo shoot Very special thanks also to Alan, who cleaned the remains of the chinchillas out of my A46 diesel!

Ha only catching up on this now!! Thank you @Horsetan for the advice and Alan @Tullygrainey for the hard work!!! The wonder of this forum never disappoints!!!

The curse of impatience strikes again....... one should have the sense not to run one's beautiful dark green A class loco A46 on one's new layout until the blasted PVA-soaked chinchilla dust has fully dried....... Anyway I now have lots of Kellogg-esque crunching noises coming from the loco and Alan (Tullygrainey) of this parish has kindly taken her to clean her out for me. Can anyone tell us how the base keeper plates are removed from underneath the bogies? TIA

Am really enjoying exploring the digital functions of the re-engined A class - tonight I (by accident) found the cab lights and main headlight (how did the originals not have these fitted!) as well as the station announcements - nicely done but probably not something I will be able to make use of! -

OK just worked out what happened here - this batch of chinchilla was actually part of a batch I coloured slightly darker for use as a platform surface!!! I have just found the rest of it and it's really sandy looking -

I have been experimenting with chinchilla dust on this build, hoping it would closely represent sand for a coastal location. Am thinking it is just looking like ordinary ballast though? Very happy with the overall appearance though. -

The permanent way department have been busy overnight, installing a new crossover at Clogherhead, the previous one had a short circuit which was throwing out some dubious sounding high pitched electronic noises. Anyway there are new strange noises to be heard today as Crossley-chipped A46 tests out the new crossover which seems to be functioning without the aforementioned dubious noises. Jeepers those Crossley engines must have made quite a racket! New Crossover.mp4 -
Brookhall Mill - A GNR(I) Micro Layout
Patrick Davey replied to Patrick Davey's topic in Irish Model Layouts
Delighted to say that at long last, Brookhall Mill will be exhibited - for one day only!!! Very many thanks to the Ulster Model Railway Club who have very kindly accommodated me on the second day of their upcoming exhibition, which runs on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th August, I will be there with the layout on Sunday 20th. Looking forward to that very much!! -
Full marks to the IRM team for no doubt undertaking a lot of work to bring these undoubtedly elusive sounds to us! Three of my 4 A class are original Crossley-engined locomotives, but so far, I have only bought one of the new decoders. From my very limited experience of installing these, I’m guessing the fragile nature of the pins makes it inadvisable to regularly swap decoders between locomotives?

Good morning folks, I am very pleased to report that all is now well! I was going to try some of the diagnostic suggestions which were kindly provided here, so I opened up the access hatch on top of the locomotive and noticed that the blanking plate was very loose, which probably explains why it wasn’t running, anyway it is now running perfectly on both DC and now DCC, with all lighting and sound functions working!! I feel quite silly for wasting your time…..

Thanks everyone for your sympathy, and for that detailed troubleshooting advice Noel, I shall indeed follow that. @Tullygrainey Alan you are very gracious, but the responsibility is fully mine, I was totally aware of the risks but thought it was only an issue if the throttle was on, lesson learnt!!!

This is a feast for the eyes of the BCDR enthusiast!!! No. 29 looks great with the number plate now too! Amazing work as always Alan, such an achievement!!!

Thanks all - it was only on the track for a few seconds, I heard the buzz and took it off quickly. It's an NCE PowerCab, how do I try it on the DC channel? Do I need the DC controller connected for that? Thanks for the help.
