  1. Great stuff. Rudel's book, Stuka Pilot, is well worth hunting down. The only book that I've ever read in one go. I borrowed it from the local library, just on the off-chance that it might be interesting - and was up until four in the morning to finish it. If it was fiction, it would be silly. I wrote to the English publisher and he sent me the last copy that he had in his garage at home. It's out on loan at the moment, but I must read it again. They do turn up regularly enough, though. There is also a photographic book about him by Gunther Just which contains some crazy pictures.

  19. None of those - but I did go to one where the good lads got to march around with Lee-Enfields in the dinner hour. We discovered that the place where they were kept, under the stage, also housed a Bren-gun and a three-inch mortar.

  22. I went to ten schools, often a long way from wherever we were living at the time - for one year, I had to go eighteen miles there, and back, every day, in what amounted to a old van with wooden benches that were fitted fore and aft - whenever the brakes were applied we all slid up to the front in a heap... There would be a queue of clip-boards a mile long if you tried it today.
  23. A career in the Observer Corps beckons.....
