Mk 3 Coaches for Repainting - Lima vs. Hornby
NIRCLASS80 replied to DJ Dangerous's topic in Irish Models
The Hornby shorties are the wrong length. The longer coaches from all the companies (Lima, Hornby, Oxford) are more or less the correct length. They all have the incorrect doors and some different window configuration. My rule of thumb is the easiest ones for dissembling and if they look ok for your layout. I went for the full length Hornby version. Seen here in action -
If there like the 071’s I simply used a wooden cocktail stick and started gently rubbing at the centre of the number and within 30 seconds they started to peel off.

Is this a model railway forum with a bit of crack or a government committee. Everyone that gives their view online needs to remember that it can be agreed with, disagreed with, laughed at, or just dished off the face of the earth. But most importantly no one dies and none of us will change the past. Enjoy the hobby and I say the whole Irish system should have UTA jeeps with Mk5a coaches. So as Accurascale is making the coaches could IRM please get the Jeep made!

The first carriages could come in sets of two and also include an 80 power car!

Looking great. Keep up the great work. I have no doubt this is going to be excellent.

I think it’s all about changing times. I would love NIR to have nothing but GM’s and racks of Gatwick’s but it’s not happening. The best very recent example is Transpennine Express route in England. After years of DMU 3 car usage they have changed to loco push/pull operation 5 carriages due to increasing passenger numbers. The new push/pull operation is just starting out but by reports on forums passengers are really appreciative of the new stock.

I would obviously love to see the Class 80 DEMU's released by IRM. I'm no expert in moulding manufacturing but there my be possibilities of using some of the parts to produce the ultimate Mk2's under the Accurascale label for the UK market and of course the NIR enterprise stock. Plus the range of colour schemes the Class80's carried and the fact they made it across much of the Irish system could help make them viable.
