Darren.d Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Have started building a loose replica of the shed at Connolly station.im stumped as how to model the raised track on the inside of the shed.any ideas would be great. Quote
Galteemore Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 (edited) This is what I would do, if you don’t have the confidence to start from scratch with bare rails and a track gauge. Make a little jig which will allow you to cut lengths of square plastic rod to exactly the requisite height. The jig will ensure consistency. Glue these to a piece of standard sleepered track and secure the whole assembly on your baseboard, making sure it’s dead flat and not twisted. When glue is fully set, snip away the sleepers. That will give you an approximation of the look, whilst ensuring that the gauge is also correct. Edited October 15, 2022 by Galteemore 1 Quote
NorthWallDocker Posted October 15, 2022 Posted October 15, 2022 Might you be able to post a few photos of the "raised track" you want to replicate in miniature? I've considered a replica of the locomotive shed, too, during the steam locomotive era. Quote

Darren.d Posted October 15, 2022 Author Posted October 15, 2022 Was thinking of scratch building .using lengths of flex track onto square rod of styrene.a 3d printed post with a chair for the rail would be ideal but iv no access to one. Cheers for the help.its good to hear someone else's ideas. 5 Quote
Noel Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 Balsa is great for stable structural rigidity when constructing buildings. It’ll never warp. @Darren.d by chance I watched this just the other evening. Y You might get some tips from part of it. 1 1 Quote
Darren.d Posted October 16, 2022 Author Posted October 16, 2022 Saw this myself yesterday.exactly what id need.would need multiples of it.my shed is 260 mm wide and 1000 mm long.with 3 tracks inside.maybe I'm being to ambitious for a first build.thinking a 3d printer might be a cheaper alternative ,as need raised walkways ,vents and roof details. NorthWallDocker Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 The potential risk of 3-D printing is the accuracy you need for keeping gauge and stability. I'd suggest what Galteemore suggested, and the Chadwick Model Railway Club's video instruction. 1 Quote
Darren.d Posted October 16, 2022 Author Posted October 16, 2022 Think iv some old straight track pieces. Might do up a few test bits and see what works on a short scale before trying to run a long length. have 4mm styrene rod.. Quote

Darren.d Posted October 20, 2022 Author Posted October 20, 2022 I was looking at that.its exactly what I need.would need multiple sets.curious if parts could be bought separately. Would need enough for around 700mm of track times 3. Quote
Darren.d Posted October 23, 2022 Author Posted October 23, 2022 Frame in 6mm balsa wood.500mm long so far.500 more to finish.have done side building separately in wood and clad in card before adding outer covering and roof, windows, gutters etc. 1 Quote

Darren.d Posted January 21, 2023 Author Posted January 21, 2023 Just curious, anybody have an idea when the 4 brick arches were removed and the shutters installed on the engine shed in connolly.iv seen a picture of the shed in 1971 with the arches and also looks like the modern side building is not there either.looks like something red brick in keeping with rest of building.iv been unable to find a picture of what this was. Iv the side extension made as a separate building as not sure when it was added.think ill make up both fronts of the shed and see which I like best.id like my shed to be sorta mid seventies in feel.im a child of the 70s after all. Darren.d Posted March 10, 2023 Author Posted March 10, 2023 Have knocked up a new front of arches.been spending time looking up pictures and videos online and after a bunch of attempts its not too bad.it also seems there's a side building and what looks like a chimney.also have looked at a survey map from around 1910 and there's a 4 track coal yard to the right of the turntable. Need a trip to marks models have to get brick paper sheets.trial and error iv used up my stock.also need windows and brick headers from lcut uk which takes several weeks . 14 Quote
