Hello all, hope ye are all keeping well?  This is my first post on here. I am currently working on the design and in the early stages of printing a MGWR coach 3rd class and I was informed here is a great place to post same. From here I am hoping to educate myself with regards these types of coaches their usage and any other information people may be willing to share with me. I am on the first rung of the ladder with regards knowledge of the railway in Ireland so forgive me if I do not use the correct terminology at any point. The pictures are of my design and prints and they are a  first rough draft test print which I did yesterday on my ender 3s. I look forward to learning and thank you all regards Owen.

I had just posted about your work this morning own 😁 welcome to the forum

I do wonder could the chassis itself could be 3d printed. A flangeless centre wheel and something in the passenger design to give it a bit more weight

i have seen these on eBay too. If you got 3 axles, maybe a few brands of these and made “steps” for the coaches it might look very good

Firstly thank you for the welcome. I saw your post and I appreciate the mention, I really do. As regards the chassis, yes of course it is possible. I was thinking of having a pivoting centre axle, but the flangeless wheel also sounds like a great idea. Thank you.

A massively important "gap" in Irish railway models filled - the best of luck with it! The initial print looks highly promising, and if it's anything like the other products of yours which I was very happy to get, it will be a real beauty.

Seven possible liveries, too.........

Owen.

Good to see your taking the initiative to produce a 3D Model of a MGWR 6w coach.

The coach and window profile and paneling on MGWR 6w Atock coaches are distinctive and quite unlike that used by other Irish companies.

The windows had rounded top and right angle lower corners. The MGWR used half round strip to cover the panel joints.1514106282_AtockCoachbodyprofile.thumb.jpg.caf1513968e0d623c83c3ed1ec60ca37.jpg

The panel layout appears to have varied between batches of coaches as they were built at Broadstone.

A number of Padraic O'Cuimin Broadstone Series (un-dimensioned) drawings of MGWR 6 wheelers are available in the Resources section of this newsgroup. The IRRS Flickr group is a good source of photos of these coaches, the IRRS published a compendium of MGWR coach GA drawings including the 6 wheelers.

A lot of the ones with the more elaborate beading were re-done at different times in their lives by the GSR, and more especially by CIE. Many later (1950s) re-panelling was done in steel or aluminium sheeting.

Thank you @Mayner @jhb171achill @Westcorkrailway for your input and help. The pictures of the coach will be of great help with the design process. What i am aiming to do first  is design and print the coach using my filament printers as seen in the earlier photos that i posted until i am happy with the results and I am hoping then to be able to be print with alot higher level of detail to the finish on the coach using my resin printers. Only time will tell but I will keep ye all posted of my progress with same as we I go. Much appreciated to all, Owen.

Hi all, here is the most recent work I have to show on my MGWR 3rd class coach design. I went ahead and printed my whole design in resin, the roof, interior and the body. I need to tweak certain aspects of the design. From this print I learnt alot. I found the roof needs to be too strengthened some what as it was too weak and broke on me when I was trying to take it off the print bed. I need to tweak the floor interiors footprint as it is just a tiny bit to big, it needed a small amount of filing and I mean a small amount to make it snug. I will post updates on this design/print as I go. Now I am on to designing the chassis for it next. As always thank you and happy modelling to you. Owen.

Recent photos suggest this model could have a chassis built in.

in which case. I’d almost be tempted to cancel my hattons pre order!

Hattons will give you a different design - the GSWR type. Completely different, and appropriate to mix in with MGWR types; remember the old adage that pre- the "supetrain" Mk 2s and their equivalents on the NIR Enterprise of 1970, there was probably never a passenger train ran in Ireland composed of several of the same type of coach.

(Now you see why us oul wans find Mk 2, Mk 3 & Mk 4 - be they in CIE, IE, NIR or RPSI ownership - sterile and boring!)

So keep the Hattons order, and get a few of these, and a few of KMCE Models' excellent DSER six-wheelers (as shown recently on "Dugort Harbour") for an authentic mix-mash.

Here are the latest photos of my MGWR kits. I had to go the road of making them in a kit form as they would not print at all as a whole body piece. So i printed the four walls of every coach in resin to help with the detail level and the interiors and the roofs in filament. There are a 1st class, , 1st/3rd composite, a 3rd class, a 1st saloon/brake and a brake/3rd. Not sure if I have the correct terminology her but i am sure @Westcorkrailway or @jhb171achill can help me out or any one else on here for that matter. I am new to the irish railways and learning something new about them every day. I am currently working on a chassis design to suit and run these coaches and in the process of design the roof vents to print them in resin for extra detail. Thank you all enjoy and I might see you at Wexford this weekend.

Something for N gauge fans too. Possibly an entire train made up by Owen!

in the backround you can spot a chassis Owen has been working on too. But to see more ye will have to go to Wexford 😉

That train looks great, I am certainly in the market for that if it comes out in n gauge.

some shots from Wexford of Owens N gauge MGWR  coaches on “stove R” RTR 6 wheel chassis….if you could paint an Eau de nil line you could have a CIE train made up for very cheap relitivly speaking

That's promising. I wonder if they'd be correct for the one that's been rotting away in the Clifden Station Hotel complex for a few decades?

Yes, one of them (the full third) would.
