The DD’s will be held together by bale twine, the 29s will be fine, except for the fact there won’t be any floor left

plenty of 29s going around with new floors

Do you have any idea where? Haven't come across such a press release anywhere in the usual and unusual places.

I’ll have a look! Thought it might have been here but can’t find it….

There's this from a while ago

https://www.railjournal.com/rolling-stock/irish-rail-and-northern-ireland-railways-tender-new-enterprise-fleet/

Theres also a tender out to refresh the older stock to hold it over until then. One of the gennys has already been refurbished at Inchicore this year.

I’m sitting in a so-called “enterprise” right now. Supposed to be a DD, but of course it’s a 3-car NIR railcar, jammed with people standing before it even leaves Connolly. Wish I’d taken the bus.

8.50 is usually NIR CAF, 9.50 and 10.50 are usually loco hauled, 11.50 ICR.

Hourly service is really too much to ask from the locos and the DDs, the infrastructure of loco-hauled stock isn't in place anymore. There's no loco to save a train if it sits down say in Dundalk or somewhere nearby, the CAFs aren't designed for such a service. Only the ICRs are a decent substitute, and there's not enough of them to fully substitute.

Yes - you’ve hit the nail on the head.

No tea trolley even, on this jam-packed oul crate. Was looking forward to a cooked breakfast!

There should be a trolley on one of the 2x3 cars. Usually its the one at the Connolly end of the set.

I’m reminded of an Enterprise trip in early DD days when the timetable was optimistic and the substitute was a 6-car 80. I was ‘lucky’ to get a seat with my back against the engine compartment as it roared, thumped and howled in a valiant but doomed attempt to keep time.

No trolley on this 3-car, and none on an NIR 6-car I was on some weeks ago.

Gawd be with the days when 4.4.0 No. 207 could be produced with a fine set of wooden GNR carriages, as per my very earliest Enterprise memory (I guess about 1962)…

I can only hope the new sets when they come out are reliable and comfortable.

Sadly I’m of the wrong generation to remember those times, but I have fond memories of some RPSI trips including a very valiant effort by 186 (a substitute itself after 4 had failed).
186 seemed to enjoy it as she arrived in Connolly with a huge glowing red smile! We’ll not talk about the speeds achieved by those little goods-engine wheels.
(A good thrashing over the hills had filled the smokebox with half-burnt char which then heated the lower half of the smokebox door to a red heat, hence the smile)

I also enjoyed a Herculean effort by 85 with 7 on, unassisted out of Cork on a wet slippy day and in simple mode for the first 3 miles, barely reaching 12mph. The tunnel roof got a good blasting and 85 was more black than blue on arrival at Mallow.

In the old days, trains would have 2 or 3 locos for that climb.

The 08:00 ex Belfast was a 3 car today due to a set failing, 10:50 also while 14:00/16:50 a 6 car. And I have first class tomorrow on the 07:00!!!

Current Updates:

> 06:00 Belfast to Connolly stuck in Newry

> 07:00 Belfast to Connolly stuck in Lanyon Place

> 08:00 Belfast to Connolly stuck in Lanyon Place

On the Dublin side,
>05:50 Connolly to Belfast stuck somewhere between Dundalk and Portadown

> 06:50 Connolly to Belfast terminated Dundalk

> 07:40 Connolly to Belfast terminated Dundalk

Expect possible short 22s, CAFs and 29s later!

I was on it recently and the advertised DD was an NIR railcar. I had upgraded (online) to 1st class.

I contacted IE for a refund of the supplement. In doing so you get passed straight to the NTA, who "assess" the claim and then redirect it to IE. Only today, some six weeks later, do i get a message saying my claim has been upheld (well, the cheek of them stating the obvious, when they would have zero right NOT to refund!). No money, of course, for ten days or so.

It's only €16, but its the principle. Suppose I had booked a group of 20 people in? I'd be out of pocket for perhaps two months by several hundred.
