Norfolk Southern heritage locos

Like Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern are painting up some of their new locos in heritage schemes to pay tribute to railroads it took over in the past, or that they can trace their lineage back to. Unlike UP, who used 'the spirit' of its former railroads to inspire fancy fantasy paint jobs, NS is going for true replications.

A full list of what they plan to do is here: http://www.nscorp.com/nscportal/nscorp/Media/images/heritage_images.html

Liveries will be carried by either a GE Gevo or an EMD/Whateverthey'recallednow SD70ACe

If anyone is feeling flush then Overland Models has announced that they'll be making all 19 heritage paints in HO brass. Yours for $1,060 a pop. http://www.overlandmodels.com/news/?p=205

The first Gevo has been released in Conrail livery. Must say it wears the big blue well http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=392356

The next heritage loco is another Gevo, this time in Southern livery. Have to say, stunning! http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=392712

Loco number 3 - Gevo in 'Nickel Plate Road' http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=393441

Central of Georgia http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=395019&nseq=2 (unbelievable picture)

Norfolk and Western http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=394626

More on the way! Anyone want to write to IE and see if they'll pump out a few 201s and 071s in retro liveries? I think the ICRs would look nice in orignal orange and black!

Id love to see an 071 in Black and Tan. A preserved 121 in the as delivered livery would be cool too. Fran do Overland get the same company that produced the 00 LMS twins a few years back to produce their brass models as those LMS locos were very tasty.

Rich,

Pretty sure you're correct Rich, Anjin brass did the LMS locos and do Overland diesels. The LMS locos are a lovely piece of kit, but have their problems, particularly with going around corners. The finish is second to none though, and something plastic cannot get near.

Here's a pic of my one, the LMS twins are probably my fave British diesel. Fancy getting some JLTRT O gauge ones when the money starts flowing again.

Have been contemplating the Dapol/Hattons OO version but am going to hold off until the Bachmann one comes out so I can have a running pair and the brass loco can live in the cabinet.

I think I have a new favourite! Now, what are the chances they'll turn out a loco in Penn Central colours?

It's nice, but will never carry it as well as the E-Units did! PRR E8 5888

I believe Penn Central has been added to the list. Can't wait for the New York Central one myself.

Slightly, but would be drawn to the GG1s first. I have enough trouble focusing as it is, 1970s bankrupt electrics would be another deviation I just cannot afford! :D

Amateur! :P

Ha! The way I look at it is if I buy one loco, I need to buy at least one more to run in pairs, then a load of freight cars to go behind it. I am already staring at present day UP, NS, BNSF,80's Santa Fe and 60's SP on the shelf next to me. And then there's the British stuff!

Another tasty one, Fran! I'm guessing these liveries are being applied to brand new locos?

Yep, the Gevo's are being delivered to NS in primer and they paint them up themselves. The ACe's will be painted by the manufacturer when they're completed and delivered directly.

Fran you have even got me frothing now. Do you get the models from the U.S Fran or more locally. I have a bit of a fondness for the Baltimore and Ohio Railway myself. If I had the space I would love to model something like Keyser yard in the late fifties with lot's of SD7-SD9 locos, Alco switchers.

Rich, it depends really on what I'm getting. If it's a loco, I can usually get it cheaper in the states, including shipping and in the case of sound fitted, cheaper than the UK despite the risk of customs and P&P. I usually use http://www.modeltrainstuff.com or http://www.trainworld.com for the states.

There is a good shop in the UK called Model Junction http://www.modeljunction.info and I buy a lot of freight cars etc from there. I have bought some locos there too, for instance they have a good sale on non sound Atlas locos at the moment, and I've snapped up a few. They even test them before posting them out and give you a guarantee saying so. Postage can be a bit pricey though, but great service and website.

The signal box http://www.thesignalbox.co.uk also carries some yank stuff, and I've bought some rolling stock from them too.

Fran your killing me mate. Why can't we have nice liveries like that over here

I know man, here's another one for you, although not a heritage repaint! Electro Motive are showing off their latest SD70ACe which is compliant with the latest emissions regulations with this slick looking demonstrator which is currently working for NS. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=2779711

And a video of her in action. Personally prefer the ACes to the Gevos, so cannot wait to see them in the heritage paint in the coming weeks...

Garfield you just don't realise how much work I have to do for other lads I hardly get a chance to work on my own stuff. Also I want to get the look of them just right so I'm doing a little research if you look at and American weathered loco the weathering is a different colour
