So I recently got gifted a collection of Tri-ang / Hornby stuff, however the condition of it wouldn't be great but rather than see it go to waste I said I'll try and restore it! Now this will probably be a bit of a challenge as there's a good bit of rust on some items but where theres a will, theres a way. 20240602_195718.thumb.jpg.55c1b7c5704537f965ed1a7de01c7661.jpg

There's some nice stuff in here though with a bit of American stuff and even a Hornby Dublo breakdown crane. (Probably not much, but exciting to me!) 20240603_141239.thumb.jpg.8deab966d2f2b6f51a46fac6cfee4309.jpg

Today I started on some items that just needed a clean like this nice wagon with opening sides, why dont we have nice features in cheaper models anymore?20240603_152357.thumb.jpg.27c14bbf875e88ccf03feadf701aaf48.jpg

Then I moved onto this very grubby United dairies tanker 20240603_135029.thumb.jpg.36b944225220ec8ec49418ff10603abb.jpg

What a difference a bit of tlc does eh?20240603_184424.thumb.jpg.fa8910a3569117a3a5275603f7abd315.jpg20240603_152910.thumb.jpg.700f59894fb393cb9265a40bf455542a.jpg20240603_160600.thumb.jpg.1284a629b598198e2e5a79c607b38f6a.jpg

Nice bit of American influence, this is the dummy car but did clean up very nicely...IMG_20240603_180934_031.thumb.jpg.304120eea0461d1f911403738b9af0e7.jpg

This is one of the worse condition pieces, an old 3mt complete with smoke unit! See Hornby, you already did it 60 years ago!

This needed a complete strip down, and is going to take alot of work to get going again. You wouldn't believe the filth inside.... I'm going to try and get the rust off the metal, and hopefully something salvageable will emerge, any tips? Anyway that's enough of these toys today (let's be honest, that's what they are!) Yet another distraction, I don't think the world wants me to finish my layout.......

I should probably do something like this, as I have loads of “old” models that need some TLC as well. Great job,  I can’t wait to see the Nellie and 3MT.

Lovely to see, @Metrovik. I hope that somebody does the same for my collection when I kick the bucket.

What do you mean? Surely everyone with a 14/14 rank becomes immortal…?

Well here's a surprise, It works! Gave every rusty part a nice bath in vinegar last night, and cleaned the brushes on the motor, which happily was magnetized. This morning I got out the elbow grease and slaved away with the rusty parts and a bucket of water. Then it was just down to assembly, which needless to say was hugely satisfying. Loco was lubricated as I assembled and by some miracle, it worked! Still needs a new buffer and transfers though.

You need 15/14 for that.

This post makes me angry, because I saw this model in person a day later and it refused to work. I don't think it likes me...:SORRY:

I think your right, because when you left I got it working again!

Ah ha! I haven't given up on this just yet! On the workbench lately was the triang 3F which is running well, although it does need a new buffer. Although so does literally every single piece of rolling stock in this entire collection! 😂IMG_20240627_192012711_MFNR.thumb.jpg.99bf488865ff51c61de8f2c0a383d80f.jpg

Nellie works well flawlessly in forward detection although very much the opposite in reverse. 🤔IMG_20240627_192044058_HDR.thumb.jpg.afde8a7104e08ed53af6d7ed2b5b033e.jpg

And finally, I set out repairing the triang diesel. Seems to be a problem with the motor though. Not responding. Any thoughts?IMG_20240627_192129725_MFNR.thumb.jpg.368d1ecc48a500a6f18bfb3ccefa14fe.jpg

The photo appears to have 2 power leads not connected to the + / -  of the motor ? What is the tweezers for ?

Some times when you take a photo, what you see in the lens, doesn’t show in the photo !

Sorry not very clear. The tweezers are for picking the fluff out of the motor and the power cables are not in use. They're just sitting there and once applied to the motor it occasionally moves a tiny bit but mostly just makes a puff of smoke. The brushes and commutator have been cleaned but the magnet is slightly weak however it still chugs around by hand however I suspect it may be the problem.
