Question:  this looks like a shoreline navigational hazard marker.

Is it that kind of sign and does anyone know what the seaward facing marking is/was?

Cheers

It is a navigational sign. An email to County Antrim Yacht club might yield a reply:secretary@cayc.co.uk

I can’t confirm what’s on the Whitehead one, but a similar one near Magheramorne (which I think the ferries use to align their track into Larne) looks like this:

Not much chance of that in Whitehead! I suspect it’s Mac Arnold and Drew Donaldson out to watch the last stone train….

Fabulous. Having been engaged in something similar of late, it’s very satisfying modelling, watching a structure emerge from carefully arranged strips and sections of card/plastic - and is that some laser cut valancing/planking? Really captures look of original.

Possibly a telegraph cable marker pole. This Facebook image of its twin on Cable Road seems to confirm the Whitehead Yacht Club one in your pic:

Note the comment: "There was a second tall mast at the cable hut beside the yacht club. If you were at sea and lined them up, it would indicate the direction on the undersea cable of the sea bed and to avoid anchoring near it."

Looking at Google Maps, the twin in the photo appears to have been at the junction of Cable Road and Balmoral Avenue but is no longer there.

This one is on the Bull Wall in Dublin, though the font is different. Unfortunately no indication of the original colours of the pole or sign.
