16miller Posted March 11 Posted March 11 25 + years ago a Class 70 mule end was visible from the train going past Magheramourne quarry. I assume it's gone now? But why was it there?

They were dumped in a Quarry near Crumlin Even if that Class 70 is still there, there would like be very little of it left.. 25+ years in sea air, would be a pile of rust with brambles growing out of it by now
seagoebox Posted March 11 Posted March 11 You are all a bit wide of the mark.... MED's, CIE Park Royals, BUT cars went into the quarry at Crosshill near Crumlin. It was the cab end of 80 class driving trailer No. 741, damaged beyond repair in a firebomb attack at Balmoral 19.9.1979 These two pictures were taken at Magheramorne (note spelling !) on 18.5.1980 after the rest of it was scrapped. The cab end was kept in case it might be needed for accident repair, it was not and was cut up at Magheramorne. 7 1 2
Colin_McLeod Posted March 11 Posted March 11 (edited) There was at least one 70 class mule in Crosshill quarry that contained asbestos. It was involved in the crash at Hilden 25th March 1983. Edited March 11 by Colin_McLeod Typos

A noted landmark for many years on the climb out of Whiteabbey towards Antrim was a similar cab (off an MPD I think) which an NIR employee had converted into a garden shed!
